Automakers like Hyundai have gotten very good at packing tons of essential features into the smallest SUVs. That’s why the 2024 Hyundai Kona is such a strong competitor in the segment of compact SUVs, and it hasn’t even hit the market yet! There are three critical areas where the Hyundai SUV delivers value: starting price, fuel economy, and cargo space.

How much is the 2024 Hyundai Kona compact SUV?

The 2024 Hyundai Kona will start at $24,100 for the SE with front-wheel drive, while the fully loaded Kona compact SUV Limited with AWD is $33,150. Hyundai will offer the Kona with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive on all trim levels. At this time, only the N Line and Limited trims are available. The automaker says the SE and SEL trims are coming later in the fall.

That said, the cheapest versions of the Kona are not available yet. That $25,000 price is one of the biggest highlights of this compact SUV. It makes it an affordable brand-new option for drivers with a tighter budget. Hyundai says these compact SUVs will be available in fall 2023, which starts in just a few weeks.

Does the 2024 Hyundai Kona get good gas mileage?

The 2024 Hyundai Kona compact SUV does get good fuel economy. Front-wheel drive models get 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Those who opt for all-wheel drive will get 24 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Those looking for a vehicle that won’t require too many trips to the gas station might appreciate the Kona’s fuel economy.

The SE and SEL trims receive a 2.0L four-cylinder engine paired with an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT). Hyundai says these two trims will get 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. Hyundai uses a 1.6L turbo four-cylinder paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission on the N Line and Limited trims. This engine gets 190 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque.

Hyundai will also offer the 2024 Kona with an electric powertrain and an estimated range of 260 miles. That version will get a long-range 64.8-kWh battery, which means more driving and less charging. The automaker will also offer a 48.6-kWh battery with less range at some point.

Does the 2024 Kona have a lot of cargo room?

This compact SUV actually has quite a bit of room and corrects some issues that plagued the 2023 model. With the rear seats up, it has 25.5 cubic feet of space. That increases to 63.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Those numbers beat the Kia Soul, one of the most spacious small SUVs on the market. While cargo space might not seem like a big deal, it is when you are only working with a small vehicle like the Kona. Hyundai used some creative design elements to make the compact SUV feel more spacious than it is.

Hyundai increased the length of the gas-only Kona by 5.7 inches, making it 171.3 inches long. The wheelbase grew by 2.3 inches, making it 104.7 inches in total and an additional inch wider. These changes resulted in a headroom space of 39.9 inches in the front and 38.3 inches in the rear. Legroom in the front is 41.7 inches, and 36.4 inches in the rear.

Even though there are a lot of small and compact SUVs to choose from in the upcoming months, the 2024 Hyundai Kona is a slam dunk for these important reasons. Keep an eye out for announcements on the upcoming SE and SEL models rolling out soon.
