Extreme Towing Tests Cause the Ford F-150 Lightning to Lose Range
Towing with the Ford F-150 Lightning seems to be the popular move. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is constantly being put through extreme towing tests to see how it performs, and it’s mostly impressive. However, maxing out the Lightning can hurt its range.
How much can the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning tow?
The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning can tow up to 7,700 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,000 lbs when equipped with the standard-range battery. The base model cranks out 426 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque.
You can upgrade to the extended-range battery for the ability to tow up to 10,000 lbs. This model can carry a payload of up to 1,800 lbs. This model provides 580 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque.
The team at Fast Lane Truck maxed out the extended-range F-150 Lightning and took it to the Rocky Mountains for the world’s toughest towing test. It went 158 feet above sea level with a maxim seven percent grade over eight miles.
How well does the F-150 Lightning tow?
The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is a great option for towing and adjusts the amount of range you have based on how heavy the load is. It has perks such as trailer-sway control, an onboard scale system, and the Pro Trailer Hitch.
At the beginning of the test, the Lightning had a 63 percent charge and 97 miles of range. Switching the Lightning into Tow/Haul mode reduces the one-pedal driving power and regenerative braking it provides.
The team didn’t need to hit the brakes as much as they did with other trucks. The Lightning was able to slow down and maintain a consistent speed without much input. They couldn’t feel the trailer brakes and plan to test them later.
While going downhill, the Lightning regained six miles of range with a 70 percent charge. The independent rear suspension controls trailer sway and is pretty comfortable. The team was worried about the truck overheating while going uphill, so they slowed down.
After going about 1.7 miles uphill, the Lightning dropped to a 66 percent charge. It fell to 53 percent by the top they made it to the top. Going eight miles drained 16 percent of the battery while using 100 percent of its towing power.
So, the Ford F-150 Lightning used a surprising amount of power but felt incredibly strong and in control. It also didn’t overheat, but the weather wasn’t bad. It was only 66 degrees.
How much range does the 2022 F-150 Lightning have?
The standard-range 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning has an estimated range of about 230 miles. This model is equipped with the 98.0 kWh battery pack. You can upgrade to the extended-range model with the 131.0 kWh battery pack and up to 320 miles of range.
It provides an estimated 78 MPGe in the city and 63 MPGe on the highway. The standard-range model gets about 76 MPGe in the city and only 61 MPGe on the highway. Critics are impressed by its power and how quiet it is.
So far, the F-150 Lightning is passing each towing test with flying colors, but losing power is a slight concern regarding range anxiety. We will keep you up to date on how well the Lightning performs.
