The Ford F-150 Lightning Might Learn a New Trick to Challenge the Chevy Silverado RST EV
The Chevy Silverado electric truck has one feature that Ford is trying to match on the new F-150 Lightning. Ford is now delivering its F-150 Lightning and it’s getting rave reviews. It’s quiet, it’s fast, it can tow, and it can power your house and even charge a Tesla. But the Chevrolet Silverado RST electric truck will be bringing one feature that the Ford F-150 Lightning doesn’t offer: four-wheel steering.
Ford is reportedly working on a system that does a Rivian-like tank turn
Tanks turn by turning their inside track in the opposite direction of the outside track. Rivian added the tank turn feature to its Rivian R1T electric truck, and it certainly helps the truck do tight turns and donuts. But it’s primarily an off-road trick. According to Fox News, Ford is also working on a tank-turn option for the F-150 Lightning. It’s not four-wheel steering, like the Chevrolet RST, but it could help the truck in off-road situations and thread through tight trails.
Ford also filed a patent for a four-wheel steering system. Its system would also turn the wheels in opposite directions. Ford has not confirmed these options, yet.
Thread tight parking garages with ease
Full-sized trucks are big and tough to thread through tight parking garages or even Trader Joe’s lots. One clever way to help a truck, or any vehicle, is to add four-wheel steering. The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado Electric truck is adding the feature. The front wheels turn in an opposite direction from the rears to help it make a much tighter turning circle than a truck that can just turn the front wheels. Sports cars have used these systems for years because they can also help on high-speed turns.
Other EV trucks already offer four-wheel steering
GMC’s Hummer EV has four-wheel steering that, famously, allows it to “crab walk,” or simply pivot for, say, parallel parking. LeBron James helped make the system famous in a Super Bowl ad. Tesla, too, says the Cybertruck will have four-wheel steering.
EV startup Lordstown says its new Endurance electric truck will also have a four-wheel steering system. Hyundai and Kia are also working on a four-wheel-steering system.
How much will the Chevy Silverado RST electric truck cost?
The basic Work Truck version of the electric 2024 Chevy Silverado will start at $39,900. However, the RST will come as a limited edition that will set you back a staggering $105,000. The Work Truck will be the first version released, followed by the RST. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning starts at $39,974 and its ultimate package, the F-150 Lightning Platinum, will start at about $90,874 and is easily identifiable by its 22-inch aluminum wheels.
The Silverado EV will be built on the same platform as the GMC Hummer EV, and one similar to the upcoming Blazer EV. General Motors created the Ultium platform to be the basis for all of its EV models. Most can be ordered in one- or two-motor setups. The RST will get a two-motor setup that makes up to 664 horsepower, while the GMC Hummer EV gets a three-motor version that makes up to 1,000 horsepower.
