This week, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a strong warning to “unruly” passengers as summer travel ramps up. The FAA is tightening its grip on disruptive behavior to ensure everyone’s safety in the skies. The group says that from January 1 to June 9, 2024, it collected 915 reported incidents of unruly travelers, with 106 of these due to intoxication.

The FAA’s message is straightforward: misbehaving will cost you. Since January 13, 2021, the FAA has enforced a Zero-Tolerance Policy, replacing warning letters and counseling with immediate fines. The agency pursues legal action against anyone who assaults, threatens, intimidates, or disrupts airline crew members, with fines reaching up to $37,000 per violation.

According to the FAA’s Unruly Passenger page, 2,075 unruly passenger reports came through in 2023. From these reports, the group initiated 512 investigations, 402 enforcement actions, and $7.5 million in fines.

While incidents dropped drastically since 2021, the FAA wants travelers to know that “poor” behavior on planes won’t be tolerated. This firm stance comes in response to a troubling increase in disruptive passenger incidents year-to-date.
