Now that the Fast and Furious movies are 20 years old, let’s look at all of the cars destroyed during filming. From Paul Walker’s famous Toyota Supra to the Lykan Hypersport from Furious 7, these movies have something for everyone.

Do the Fast and Furious movies destroy collectible cars?

Craig Lieberman was the technical adviser on Fast and Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift. He recently put out a video detailing the cars that crashed during filming for the first three films in the franchise.

Probably three to four backup cars were waiting off-screen for every car that we see in the movie. A special team has cloned each car that might be featured in a crash scene. That means Dominic Toretto’s 1970 Dodge Charger R/T is safe!

The main car was dubbed the “hero” or “principle” car, won’t be destroyed. However, the cloned cars likely will be. There is also likely a second hero or principle car, just in case. When we see someone like Paul Walker pull up to Vin Diesel at a stoplight, the actors drive the hero car.

The cloned cars are often junkyard finds or non-running junk cars that production gave a makeover. The team made these junk cars resemble the hero car so that the actors can use the cars interchangeably.

For the famous Toyota Supra, there were eight different versions of the car created or used. Two versions were the hero car and the second hero car. The rest were clones. The video lists the cars’ various prices, from $24,000, $19,000, $9,900, $400. There was even a free black Supra. 

So Fast and Furious is not out here destroying rare cars. The production car team is piecing together junk cars to resemble rare cars. Movie magic!

How many cars were crashed during filming for ‘Fast and Furious’?

Based on this list provided by ScreenRant, the first The Fast and the Furious (2001) movie destroyed a total of 78 cars. 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) crashed 130 cars. The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) sacrificed 249 cars. There was a lot of crashing in that movie.

For the fourth movie, Fast & Furious (2009), production crashed 190 cars. Fast Five (2011) lost 260 cars. Fast & Furious 6 (2013) crashed 350 cars! Furious 7 (2015) destroyed 230 cars. That’s a total of 1,487 cars sacrificed to the movie gods.

According to CNBC, insurance company Insure the Gap researched the price of the cars from the franchise. 348 cars were destroyed in some capacity for The Fate of the Furious (2017). This came out of a total of about $527 million in damaged cars for the first seven movies.

In conclusion, that brings the total to 1,835. However, that doesn’t count F9 (2019), which would likely take the total up to around 2,000. The Fate of the Furious also destroyed a submarine. So the total is 1,835 cars, one submarine.

Don’t be sad about the wrecked cars

Think of it as rescuing the cars from the junkyard. Some of the cars were not running and sitting in the sun in some lot somewhere. The Fast and the Furious team rescued the cars and gave the cars a better life.

Some of the more famous featured cars will go on to live in a museum, while others were sacrificed to the movie gods. Either way, destroying 1,835 cars is a lot of work.

However, we can rest easy knowing Brian’s Nissan R34 GT-R made it through unscathed.
