What Is the Fastest 2022 Toyota Camry Trim Level?
When shopping for a 2022 Toyota Camry, how fast it can go is probably the last thing on any shopper’s mind. After all, the Camry is a midsize sedan that’s meant to haul around families and their stuff reliably for many years, not win top-speed races. But in case anyone is dying to know, here is the fastest 2022 Camry trim level that you can buy.
The fastest 2022 Toyota Camry trim level may not surprise you
Let’s cut to the chase, the 2022 Toyota Camry TRD is the fastest trim level in the lineup. It has a 3.5-liter V6 under the hood that pumps out 301 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. That beefy engine is not only a joy to drive every day, but it also gets the car up to a top speed of 135 mph, according to Car and Driver. That’s pretty fast for a commuter car, but we wouldn’t expect any Camry owners to get anywhere near that speed on the streets.
Top speed aside, another impressive stat for Toyota’s fastest Camry is its 0-60 mph time. The editors at Car and Driver were able to get the Toyota Camry TRD up to 60 mph from a standstill in just 5.8 seconds. That’s as quick as some sports cars. We can attest to the car’s speed because we have tested out the Camry TRD ourselves and were thoroughly impressed with its performance and on-road manners. Also, the car has a TRD exhaust on it, but that’s mainly for the sound more than any real power. It does sound good, though.
Does the Toyota Camry TRD handle well?
Yes. The Toyota Camry TRD is outfitted with stiffer TRD springs that lower it by 0.6-inch and TRD anti-roll bars that keep it from wobbling under heavy cornering. Compared to the non-TRD Camry trim levels, the TRD model definitely sticks to the ground better, thanks in part to the summer tires wrapped around the matte-black 19-inch TRD wheels. Fortunately, those additional handling components don’t stiffen up the car too much as we found the ride to be compliant and comfortable at all speeds.
When it comes to time to slow things down, the Camry TRD stops well with its larger 12.9-inch front brakes. One aspect that we liked about the upgraded brakes was that they had a good “bite” to them without feeling too racecar-like.
Is the Camry TRD available with a manual transmission?
No, sadly it is not. Instead, the 2022 Camry TRD can only be equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The transmission shifts smooth and does well to keep the car in its powerband when you stomp your right foot on the floorboard. It also only sends the power to the front wheels.
So if you need an all-wheel-drive configuration for snowy climates, then we recommend looking into one of the other Camry trim levels equipped with the four-cylinder engine. But if you have the need for speed – even if it’s not anywhere close to 135 mph – then the 2022 Toyota Camry TRD is the best choice for you.
