If you’re looking for a luxury car with sports car-like performance, a BMW is worth checking out. The German automaker has long been known for producing some of the fastest luxury sedans and SUVs in the market over the past few decades and hasn’t stopped. In fact, the fastest sedan in BMW’s current lineup is as fast a supercar but exudes the cruising luxury you would expect from a luxury sedan.

How fast is the 2023 BMW M5 Competition?

The fastest sedan in BMW’s current lineup is the 2023 BMW M5 Competition. This beast of a sedan employs a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine that puts down 617 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. However, the folks at Car and Driver dyno tested the M5 and found that it actually puts out 617 hp and 606 lb-ft of torque to the wheels, which means the car is underrated from the factory.

That’s definitely not a bad thing. The publication also tested the car’s acceleration performance and found that it reached 60 mph from a stop in only 2.8 seconds. That’s comparable to many exotic cars that cost considerably more than the 2023 M5.

Regarding driving the M5, the editors at Car and Driver noted: “Driving enjoyment is maximized here with lively and direct steering and a well-controlled, albeit stiff, ride.” However, they also went on to say that “in Comfort mode, it cruises placidly, the cabin whisper quiet.” To add to the sedate experience, the M5 has comfortable sports seats and plenty of in-cabin/trunk space.

How much is the fastest BMW sedan?

The 2023 BMW M5 has a starting price of $109,900. That price can easily escalate when you start adding options and accessories. For example, the premium paint choices cost an extra $1,950, and the premium wheels cost $1,300. Additionally, the full Marino leather interior costs another $3,500, and the Competition package costs an extra $7,600.

The Competition package is responsible for the extra 17 hp over the standard M5 configuration, in addition to 20-inch wheels, a sport exhaust system, sports seats, and more. We would also recommend adding the Driver Assistance package, which adds lane-keep assistance and a traffic jam assistant for another $1,700.

Lastly, BMW offers an Executive package that includes front seat ventilation and massage functions, parking sensors, heated front and rear seats, and a surround-view camera for another $3,450. With all of these options, including an upgraded 1,400-watt Bower and Wilkins sound system, the BMW M5 can easily eclipse the $132,000 mark.  

Considering that price includes blisteringly quick performance, plenty of seating for five, and all of the creature comforts you could want, it’s quite the bargain compared to a similar performer like the Acura NSX or Audi R8. It’s hard to argue with sedan comfort and exotic-car performance.

Is there a faster BMW sedan on the way?

As if the 2023 BMW M5’s 617 hp and insanely quick acceleration times weren’t enough, the German automaker is slated to up the performance ante for the next model year. Car and Driver expects the forthcoming 2025 BMW M5 to push out around 735 hp and 735 lb-ft of torque. It will likely use a similar powertrain to the XM Label Red SUV, which incorporates four electric motors.

With that type of assistance, the next BMW M5 could be able to travel up to 60 miles on all-electric power. Of course, it’s hard to speculate what type of acceleration times this type of hybrid beast would put out, but it could be a little quicker than the current model. Either way, with a car like the M5, it’s clear that BMW knows how to build the ultimate driving machine that can cruise like a luxury sedan and have the performance of a supercar.
