Drivers are often attracted to the Ford F-150 because it provides plenty of options. However, this is about to change. The Ford F-150 may drop a few cab configurations and build options in an attempt to improve efficiency. 

Popular Ford F-150 cab configurations could bite the dust 

For the first time in a while, the Ford F-150 may be offered with fewer options. This is a surprising move because the F-150 is often praised for its various configurations and abilities to meet diverse customer needs. 

But the Ford F-150 Lightning may show that consumers don’t need as many options. It quickly generated 200,000 reservations and sold out despite only offering two variants. People could select that standard-range or long-range battery options. 

This could mean that dropping F-150 configurations wouldn’t hurt sales. It might be a way to reduce complexities in assembly plants, reduce costs, and improve efficiency. 

Lisa Drake, vice president of EV Industrialization, shared that 200,000 units at scale on one body configuration can make between 70 to 90-hour jobs at production facilities like the Dearborn trucking plant. 

Reducing the complexity of trucks, like the F-150 Lightning, may unlock amazing efficiency. Things learned from producing the Lightning might be applied to the gas-powered models. 

Which F-150 options are at risk? 

Nothing is being set in stone for the Ford F-150 yet. However, Ford Authority mentions that the language used could mean that the F-150 may drop a few different body styles and options in the future. 

This would probably put the most unpopular options at risk. The fan favorites will probably stick around. For example, the SuperCrew 4×4 models usually stay at the top of the sales charts. As a result, some higher trim levels are only offered with 4×4. 

For example, Ford has been slowly reducing options based on sales reports. Now the Ford Super Duty King Ranch and Platinum trims are only available with 4×4. 

As Ford transitions into more of a build-to-order business model, even fewer options will be at the dealership lots. Dealers will focus on models with limited configurations instead. 

What’s new for the 2023 F-150? 

We haven’t heard about what’s getting dropped for the 2023 Ford F-150 yet, but we do know about exciting new options. For example, the F-150 Rattler is a new affordable off-roading option. 

It adds 18-inch wheels, an off-roading suspension, a rear locking differential, a dual-exhaust system, hill descent control, and plenty of rattlesnake logos. 

Plus, the 2023 F-150 Heritage Edition celebrates 75 years of F-Series trucks. Despite coming out in 1948, the Heritage Edition adopts retro styling cues from the 1970s. 

You can celebrate with a two-tone paint job where the roof, lower doors, and bumpers have one hue, and the mid-section features a different color. Also, the interior features a few comfortable upgrades with unique badging. 

Soon the F-150 Raptor R will be on the prowl. It’s expected to have a supercharged Predator V-8 engine that can crank out at least 720 hp.

So, cab configurations aren’t being dropped yet, but they could be soon. Soon fewer options will be on the dealership lot, though, so you’ll have to find your perfect option online.
