Ferrari F8 Spider: 7 Cool Facts
There is a newly announced Ferrari catching many drivers’ eyes, the F8 Spider. But where does it fit in the Ferrari lineup? To save you time, we sorted through the official information released about F8 Spider and have highlighted the seven most interesting and impressive facts below.
Convertible F8 Tributo
The F8 Spider is the drop-top complement to the recently announced F8 Tributo. It uses the same twin-turbo, 3.9-liter V8 engine as the F8 Tributo. Both cars are boosted with technological systems that allow the drivers to take advantage of the engine’s power. The first is the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer Plus which adjusts brake pressure coming out of corners. There is also Side Slip Control, helping drivers maintain control even when the rear end may be prone to slipping and sliding.
Essentially, the F8 Spider is an F8 Tributo that’s been modified to add a convertible hardtop instead of a fixed roof.
Award-Winning Engine
The 3.9-liter V8 engine used in the F8 Spider can be traced back to the V8 in the 488 Spider, the car the F8 Spider replaces. This is an award-winning engine, taking the International Engine of the Year award in 2019. 2019 was the fourth year in a row Ferrari grabbed the title, which is an unparalleled series of successes for Ferrari.
Supercar Emissions
The F8 Spider was designed with the environment and increasingly strict emissions standards in mind. The model includes a gas particulate filter to help the car meet the Euro 6 emission standards. Ferrari was unwilling to allow emission requirements to compromise the F8’s power.
Lighter Weight
The F8 Spider is slimmer and trimmer than its predecessor the 488 Spider. This model weighs in 44 pounds lighter. Ferrari found ways to reduce weight in the crankshaft, flywheel, exhaust manifolds, and connecting rods. The weight reduction in the exhaust manifolds come from the use of a new material, a heat-resistant nickel alloy called Iconel.
Retractable Roof
One of the most eye-catching elements of the F8 Spider, and one of its main differentiators from the F8 Tributo, is its retractable hardtop. The hardtop takes only 14 seconds to deploy and is operable even when the vehicle is moving up to 28 mph. When retracted, the hardtop tucks neatly under a tonneau cover positioned above the rear-mounted engine and in between the back buttresses.
Artfully Aerodynamic
The importance of aerodynamics was not forgotten when designing the F8 Spider. Unlike the 488 Spider, the F8 Spider has beneficially positioned the front radiators to allow for cooling while also shrinking the underbody surface area that can generate downforce. This required redesign of the channels used to dissipate hot air. This redesign increased downforce while also cutting drag. These changes allow the F8 Spider to boast a 10% improvement in efficiency over the 488 Spider.
Ferrari Maintenance
Ferrari stands behind its vehicles, providing a seven-year maintenance program across its entire range of cars. The F8 Spider is no exception. The Genuine Maintenance program covers regular maintenance for the first seven years of the car’s life, including meticulous checks by staff trained at the Ferrari Training Centre in Maranello. The program is available worldwide.
If the F8 Spider has caught your eye, you can expect it to be available in summer 2020, with production beginning in early 2020. Your pocketbook, however, will certainly take a hit. The base model of this impressive car will clock in at $289,000.
