Sure, both cars are from Ferrari, and both vehicles are high-performance hybrids, but that’s about it in terms of their similarities. Their differences, however, are much more apparent. For example, Ferrari didn’t intend to build that many LaFerraris.
As such, not only was the LaFerrari very expensive when Ferrari was making them, but each LaFerrari will now be even more expensive as they’re just so rare. In fact, a LaFerrari model can fetch more than $3 million, and that’s significantly more money than what owners paid when they first bought the car. Here’s a look at how different these two cars are.
The Ferrari SF90 is a more affordable car
As Car and Driver wrote, a Ferrari SF90 will start at a base price tag of about $500,000. Of course, the convertible version of the SF90 will cost about $50,000 more, but either way, it’s much more affordable than the LaFerrari. For comparison, when Ferrari was still making the LaFerrari, each car was sold for about $1.5 million apiece. This means that the SF90 is $1 million cheaper than the LaFerrari.
And in terms of current pricing, a Ferrari LaFerrari nowadays will cost much more, and that’s because it had a limited run. Ferrari only made 499 units of the LaFerrari, and the company stopped production years ago. In comparison, the SF90 is not meant to be a limited-production car. In fact, Ferrari seems to want to continue producing the SF90 model for years to come.
As such, not only is the Ferrari SF90 more affordable, but more people will get a chance to drive and experience it. However, while the SF90 is cheaper and more readily available, it’s no slouch in terms of specs. As such, it’s also quite different compared to the LaFerrari in this area.
Other ways that the SF90 and LaFerrari are different
The Ferrari SF90 has a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that works with three electric motors to generate a combined 986 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. That’s more power than what the LaFerrari can produce. The Ferrari LaFerrari has a 6.3-liter V12 engine that generates 949 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque when paired with its electric motor.
As such, the Ferrari SF90 is about as fast as the more expensive LaFerrari. The LaFerrari could go from 0 to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds, and it topped out at about 217 mph. The SF90, according to Car and Driver, can go from 0 to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds, but it tops out at about 211 mph. Performance specs aside, the biggest difference between these two eco-friendly Ferraris is how eco-friendly they are.
The Ferrari LaFerrari is a regular hybrid, while the SF90 is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). This means that the SF90 has a 6.5-kWh battery, while the LaFerrari has nothing like that. As such, LaFerrari’s fuel economy is only 14 mpg combined, while the SF90 achieves 22 mpg combined. Additionally, the SF90 can go 15 miles on battery power alone, making it even greener than the LaFerrari.
