Hypercars and safety may not seem like they go together, but drivers are interested in a car’s safety, especially on a costly vehicle. The 2022 Ferrari SF90 plug-in hybrid hypercar certainly counts as expensive, selling for more than half a million dollars. The car delivers excellent performance, but it doesn’t offer many safety features.

The 2022 Ferrari SF90 plug-in hybrid hypercar

The Ferrari SF90 is available in the Stradale (coupe) and Spider (convertible) body styles. The car’s interior is “fairly luxurious,” according to Car and Driver, although it has only about three cubic feet of space for cargo. The two-seater car has a dashboard with lines similar to the vehicle’s exterior.

The SF90’s interior and exterior can be customized with various options for upholstery and wheel designs, plus upgrades like a digital rearview mirror, titanium exhaust pipes, colored brake calipers, and carbon-fiber components.

The car has fantastic performance, says Car and Driver, living up to its reputation as a hypercar. The car has a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine and three electric motors. The engine alone generates 769 hp, and the three motors add 217 hp, bringing the system to 986 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. The system is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The SF90 is also the first all-wheel drive mid-engine Ferrari. It can be set in different driving modes to pick among EV Only, Hybrid, Performance, and Qualify (for maximum performance).

Car and Driver tested out the SF90 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and found it could rocket from 0 to 60 mph in 2.0 seconds, making it the fastest from 0 to 60 that Car and Driver have ever tested. That’s even faster than the 2.5 seconds of Ferrari’s official estimate.

The 2022 SF90 comes standard with an LCD monitor, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio, a six-speaker audio system, real-time traffic, plus a navigation system with a voice-activation feature. Apple CarPlay is available, but Android Auto is not. The 2022 Ferrari SF90 starts at about $507,000 for the coupe or $558,000 for the convertible.

The 2022 Ferrari SF90’s safety features

The 2022 Ferrari SF90 doesn’t include many advanced driver-assistance features like most hypercars. It does come standard with a backup camera and rear parking sensors. According to iSeeCars, the similar 2021 SF90 has electronic Side Slip Control (eSSC), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), side-impact beams, F1-Trac ABS and Driveline Traction Control, tire specific low tire pressure warning, front airbags, side airbags, and seatbelts. The SF90 doesn’t offer additional driver-assistance features like a blind-spot warning.

No crash tests but an accidental test drive crash

The NHTSA and the IIHS haven’t crash-tested the Ferrari SF90. According to Car Indigo, this car isn’t likely to be crash-tested since it’s only existed for a couple of years, it’s very precisely engineered, and it’s worth more than $500,000.

Road & Track notes that a Ferrari SF90 Stradale prototype was crashed in November 2021 in Germany. While the car was destroyed, the airbag did not seem to deploy, and the driver was not injured. Interestingly, Road & Track points out that the prototype design suggests Ferrari is testing a new version of the SF90 or another high-performance car.

The 2022 Ferrari SF90 has some safety features, but it doesn’t include many advanced driver-assistance features. A test driver walked away from an accidental crash, but the car hasn’t been crash-tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS, making it hard to judge its safety truly. In a car with the SF90’s performance capabilities, its safety is likely also connected to the driver and the car’s speed.
