Ferruccio Lamborghini’s Personal Countach Changes Hands, Record Sale
The Lamborghini Countach is an iconic exotic car. For decades this collectible car was on posters in the rooms and shops of many automotive enthusiasts. The Countach also became a pop culture icon after appearing in the Cannonball Run movie. The first few moments of the film were dedicated to showing off the performance of this Italian, V12 motivated, pavement carver. In essence, the Lamborghini Countach was a drool-worthy machine. The most valuable example of one just turned up on YouTube.
The genesis of the Lamborghini Countach
In the 1960s, Enzo Ferrari and Ferruccio Lamborghini didn’t get along. In fact, that strife between the two drove Ferruccio Lamborghini, then a manufacturer of farm tractors, to create his own car company. Eventually, Mr. Lamborghini would pave the way for his new company to make many breathtaking vehicles, including the Countach.
Fast forward a couple of decades, and we find that Mr. Lamborghini liked the Countach so much that he bought his own example for his personal use. In May of 1980, he took delivery of a white LP 400 S II, low-body unit. The car has a black interior and the wide wheel arches that many fanboys have been mesmerized by.
The S II low-body cars are a little different than the earlier Countach models. These cars were made with a cabin that was a little taller than the regular S series cars. This permitted taller drivers to have a more comfortable setting position within the car.
Mr. Lamborghini’s personal Countach appears
Just recently, the same Countach belonging to Mr. Lamborgini became available for sale. The vehicle changed hands for an undisclosed amount. But, the sale price is speculated to be higher than any other Countach in the world at this time.
The new owner of this particular Lamborghini Countach has acquired the services of a shop to make sure the car is still functioning and up to the original specifications. That shop happens to have a YouTube channel. While the shop is not disclosing who the buyer was or the amount paid, it is putting on display the Countach itself through its YouTube channel.
In a video titled, Ferruccio Lamborghini’s personal Countach – World Exclusive!, a close look at the exotic rear-engine sports car is given. For the video, the shop working on the car, Iaian Tyrrell’s Classic Cars goes through the car to identify things that aren’t quite right. Then takes a quick drive to identify any other things. The clutch, for example, isn’t operating optimally.
The adjustments on the Countach make the host giddy
By the end of the video, however, the host is giddy with the results of the fine-tuning the shop has done, including the adjustment of the clutch. The Lamborghini Countach growls with ease as he steps on the gas. The car behaves exactly the way he had hoped for.
Making the video even more attractive is the fact that towards its end, another white Lamborghini Countach shows up. Scripted or not, the view of two of these iconic vehicles on the road with each other is still impressive. It is enough to make many enthusiasts go back and view the video again.
There is no word if this Lamborghini Countach will go into a museum, into storage, or start the car show scene. So, the appearance of this car again will only be known by a select few. That’s a shame, really. A car as iconic as the Countach with such a prestigious provenance should be admired. On the other hand, I can also understand if an owner wants to protect it instead. For now, the rest of us have this video to thank for giving us a glimpse of such a great car with a legendary history.
