Here’s How to Find out if Your Chevy Has Super Cruise
Self-driving cars are an awesome advancement for vehicles, but many drivers aren’t sure whether this technology is safe. To combat this and help make any level of autonomous driving more accepted, some brands developed a system to bring back the trust, including GM’s Super Cruise. While it’s expanding on the number of models available, brands like Chevrolet are beginning to implement the feature in its vehicles. What is this feature, how does it work, what models currently have it, and are there other vehicles with it?
How does the Super Cruise feature work?
Super Cruise is a GM feature that allows drivers to experience hands-free driving while behind the wheel. It works hand-in-hand with Connected Services, utilizing LiDAR map data, sensors, real-time positioning, and cameras. When driving conditions are prime, and the driver is on one of the 200,000 (or 400,000 if you have the extended pack) compatible roads, you can activate the Super Cruise feature.
The conditions required include clearly visible lane markings, GPS availability, and no bad weather situations. You’re also required to provide consistent attention to the road as the feature is working. This is detected by the use of the Driver Attention System, according to Chevrolet.
Once all requirements are met, you can activate the Super Cruise feature by pressing the button on the steering wheel marked with a steering wheel icon. Be sure to keep your hands on the wheel until the light turns green, indicating it’s been activated. When manual driving is needed, you can press the Super Cruise button again along with the brake pedal, and the feature will disengage.
How to tell if your Chevy model has the Super Cruise feature
While GM has extended the number of its models that come with this feature, you’ll find that not all of its vehicles will have it. At this time, only a handful of SUVs and trucks offer the Super Cruise system. However, more models will come with it in the future.
As of now, you can get it with the 2022 and 2023 models of the Chevy Bolt EUV. It’s also offered on the 2023 Tahoe and the Suburban, the brand’s full-size SUV. As for pickups, there are two that come with it. The first is the 2022 Silverado pickup, and the second is the 2023 Silverado LD.
The good news is that other Chevrolet models will come with it in the future. The 2024 Equinox EV, which should come out in the fall of 2023, will have it. Also coming out in the fall of this year is the 2024 Chevy Silverado, which Chevy reports will offer the feature. Lastly, the 2024 Blazer EV is set to arrive this summer with the Super Cruise feature.
Are these the only Super Cruise models?
So far, these are the only models Chevy has included Super Cruise in. However, this feature actually has almost a decade of history behind it. In 2013, GM announced it was working on an autonomous driving technology, which it planned to implement in some of its vehicles around the 2016-2017 model year, according to GM Authority.
In 2016 the company applied to register the name “Super Cruise” as a trademark. A month later, GM announced it would be delayed and would only launch when the tech was ready. In 2017, the feature was finally released with one of the organization’s models, the 2018 Cadillac CT6. By the end of 2019, GM had expanded its compatibility to over 200,000 roads in the U.S. and Canada.
The Super Cruise technology expanded in 2020 with some new features. GM implemented automated lane-changing functionality to allow the driver to request a change of lanes when traveling on a compatible road. The feature then came out with the 2021 Cadillac CT-4, CT-5, and Escalade. Unfortunately, the CT6 was discontinued in 2020. However, it’s now been added to some Chevy models.
The Super Cruise feature is an autonomous driving technology that could revolutionize how we drive our GM vehicles. While it began with the brand’s Cadillac vehicles, it has now extended into a handful of Chevy models and will ultimately reach other cars within the GMC lineup.
