First C8 Corvette Z06 Convertible Heads to Auction, as Is Tradition
The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is undoubtedly one of the most hotly anticipated cars in American history. With the already well-proven C8 mid-engine chassis, the addition of the most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 engine ever put in a production car has car enthusiasts all over the world ready to write a check. Though we don’t have any pricing yet, we know what the first one sold for. It was auctioned for over three million dollars. Now, its convertible counterpart is going to auction, too.
How much will the first C8 Z06 convertible Corvette sell for?
According to GM Authority, the first C8 Z06 convertible Corvette is set to hit the auction block this coming Saturday, April 9th, around 4:30 PM EST. It’s selling as lot number 3005 during the 2022 Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction. If there’s anywhere you’re going to find some massive hammer prices, Barrett-Jackson is the place.
Selling the first Corvette of a particular model or generation has become a staple of Chevrolet tradition. However, this auction is a bit unique. The Corvette Chevy is selling at this auction doesn’t quite exist yet. Instead, the winner of the auction is guaranteed the first convertible Z06. All that’s set in stone about it, though, is that it’s a 3LT model, the highest trim. However, everything beyond that is up to the auction winner. Color, options selected, and other details are up to the winner.
The sale of this Corvette Z06 is likely to go pretty high, too. Not just because it’s the first convertible, and it’s fully customizable, either. The proceeds from this auction are going to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The TMCF is an organization representing historically black colleges and universities as well as predominantly black institutions.
Though it’s difficult to put a price on something like this, we might be able to get an idea using the first Z06 that Barrett-Jackson auctioned earlier this year. The first Z06 sold in February at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction. It drew in a final bid of $3.1 million. After associated fees, the total was around $3.6 million. It sold to NASCAR team owner and notorious Corvette collector Rick Hendrick.
Perhaps, then, the convertible will fetch a number deep into the seven-figure range, too. Selling for charity always drives the numbers up!
What does all of that money get you?
Of course, the first Z06 sold also has something that this convertible will not; a VIN ending in a bunch of zeros and a one. So, it has a bit more historical value than this one will.
At any rate, the convertible Z06 offers a hardtop convertible system. This is the first time a hardtop convertible offering has ever made its way to the legendary Z06 namesake. Additionally, the Convertible shares the same 670 horsepower flat-plane-crank V8 engine as the coupe variant. With the top down, though, you’ll hear every last screaming RPM of that engine all the way up to the 8,600 rpm redline.
While we can’t say for sure what the final price of the first convertible will be, we can certainly be sure we’ll be watching it closely! Additionally, this car selling is only getting us and the rest of the car world excited for the official release date and pricing info on the Z06.
