The Lamborghini Countach is easily one of the most recognizable supercars in the world. Despite being initially conceived in the early 70s, young people today can likely pick one out at a local meet. The reason for that is because the Lamborghini Countach has always found a way to continuously make its mark in popular culture.

The Lamborghini Countach made one of its first film appearances back in the 80s when it appeared in The Cannonball Run movie. The Countach additionally had a role in the film The Wolf of Wall Street and featured in an iconic scene with Leonardo DiCaprio The Lamborghini’s ability to remain in the minds of several generations is one of the reasons why the Countach has a cult following despite its dubious reliability.

Lamborghini is well aware of this, and they own it proudly. That is why the Italian supercar maker has recently decided to pay homage to the iconic supercar by reconstructing the original Lamborghini Countach concept car that originally debuted in 1971.

“The Countach reinvented high-performance cars,” said Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman, and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, “and it became an icon in terms of stylistic language that even today, after decades, still inspires contemporary Lamborghinis. Bringing the reconstruction of the first Countach to the concept class of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, in the year we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of this model, is something extraordinary because it allows us to admire the legendary 1971 LP 500 in person for the first time in so many years.”

The reconstruction of the Countach LP 500 was carried out by Lamborghini’s Polo Storico and required over 25,000 hours of work. That is over 3,000 8-hour days for the math aficionados out there. The reconstruction was supervised by Lamborghini Centro Stile, the brand’s “design and style” division, and commissioned for a “very important” collector. Considering its origins, this reconstruction is probably worth a considerable amount of money. Though, it is certainly not the first Countach to command a high price.

To ensure that the Countach was reconstructed accurately, the artisans behind the project had to dig deep into the archives to find as many pictures of the car and as much documentation as possible. It can be argued that Lamborghini spent much more time and care on this reconstruction than they did on the recent retro Countach revival.

“The collection of documents was crucial,” underscored Giuliano Cassataro, Head of Service and Polo Storico. “There had been so much attention paid to all the details of the car, to their overall consistency and to the technical specifications.”

History of the Lamborghini Countach LP 500 concept car

The Lamborghini Countach LP 500 originally debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1971. The Countach’s aggressive and angular design made the car one of the most popular of the show, according to Lamborghini. They claim that photos of it went “viral.” Though, we wonder how “viral” something could go in the early 1970s.

Even if the Italian automaker is embellishing a bit when describing the reception to the first Lamborghini Countach, we believe that the car made a significant impression. There is a reason why the Countach is still a beloved supercar to this day.

Once the car was finished, its owner entered it into the concept car class at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. However, since this Countach was commissioned for a private owner, it is unclear whether it will be displayed at any other public event.

If we’re lucky, it may go on a world tour before it ends up locked away in a private collection.
