As we enter the age of electric vehicles, cars from new automakers are entering the market. These new vehicles offer consumers more choices. One of these automakers, Fisker Inc., isn’t strictly new. However, they have two exciting new EVs coming soon with the Ocean and PEAR. So, what do we know about the automaker? What do we know about the Fisker Ocean vs. the Fisker PEAR?

Fisker Inc.

The automotive company we now know as Fisker Inc. was once Fisker Automotive, founded in 2007. The American EV automaker produced luxury electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in the 2000s. Its greatest success was the Fisker Karma.

The Karma debuted in 2008 and was among the world’s first production luxury plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Still, while the Fisker Karma was an impressive plug-in hybrid sports car, the automaker had many obstacles in its path to success. 

It started with a lawsuit filed against Fisker Automotive in 2008 by Tesla. The suit claimed that the design work for the Model S by Fisker Coachbuild was subpar. It went on to claim that Fisker kept their best ideas for Karma. It was a lawsuit Tesla went on to lose.

Later, Fisker’s A123 batteries were recalled late in 2011. A second recall followed in March 2012 by supplier A123 Systems. The supplier went bankrupt later that same year. Then, Hurricane Sandy struck in October 2012, flooding destroying the automaker’s entire European shipment of 338 Karmas in New Jersey.

The company went bankrupt and closed its doors in 2014. Wanxiang bought the rights to the Fisker Karma and used the assets to found a new company named Karma Automotive. It produced the Karma Revero plug-in hybrid, which is based on the Fisker Karma.

The Fisker logo and trademarks were retained by founder Henrik Fisker who launched Fisker Inc. in 2016. The new company developed new concepts for luxury EVs including the Ocean and PEAR.

The 2023 Fisker Ocean

The 2023 Fisker Ocean SUV was unveiled at the 2021 Los Angeles auto show. Henrik Fisker, Fisker’s CEO, explained that the brand is being revived with a focus on environmental responsibility and sustainability. The stylish Ocean will use reclaimed materials like recycled plastic bottles to line the luxury SUV’s interior, according to Car and Driver.

The base Sport model starts at $39.000 and has an estimated all-electric driving range of 250 miles. Fisker will offer three trims, including the Extreme model offering an estimated 350 miles on a single charge. Ocean’s dual-motor setup will have a power output of 550 horsepower. High trims can go from 0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds. All Oceans, aside from the Sport trims, have all-wheel drive.

The 2023 Fisker Ocean will offer unique available features. There’s a 17.1-inch center touch screen that rotates horizontally and vertically. It has a mode that opens the rear glass, side windows, and roof panel for a convertible effect. The solar panels on the roof of the SUV harvest energy from the sun and send it back into the battery to extend the driving range.

The new Fisker Ocean will go into production later this year, with deliveries starting in November. The first 5,000 units will be Ocean One launch editions. The Fisker Ocean will be available to buy or lease via a direct-sales model, and reservations are open.

The 2024 Fisker PEAR

The folks at Fisker are also releasing a smaller SUV called PEAR (Personal Electric Automotive Revolution), according to InsideEVs, that’s also focused on innovative technology and sustainability. It will be more affordable, too, with a starting price of around $30,000. You might not get all the smart, luxury features the Ocean has, but Fisker claims it offers a spirited driving experience.

For the price, it may be a big success. At this point, it’s said to be a stylish small SUV with a decent driving range. At this point, we don’t have many details. It will be manufactured in Ohio in partnership with Foxconn, an electronics manufacturer. Deliveries will start in 2024, and Fisker is accepting refundable reservations now for $250. You can reserve an additional PEAR for just $100 more.

The PEAR is an “urban mobility device,” according to its CEO, that’s affordable, beautifully designed, and features the latest tech.
