Five Quarantine Activities for Auto Enthusiasts
There’s been a lot of discussions on how people can pass time during their Coronavirus quarantine period. Let’s face it, it’s easy to run out of ideas. Cabin fever might even set in soon if it hasn’t already. So, what are some automotive-based ideas the auto enthusiasts can do? Listed below are five activities that can fill highlight your day, or that of your family.
1 – Coloring Pages
Callum Design, a firm founded by famed designer Ian Callum, has created coloring pages. The design firm is even sponsoring a contest for those that color the pages and submit them back to the firm. You can find them here. Stay between the line and good luck!
2 – Check out the Museums Online
Car shows have been canceled or postponed on a mass scale for the next few weeks. But, that does not keep auto enthusiasts from wanting the learn more about automotive history, or specific makes and models. Museums are great at filling that itch.
The Petersen Museum in Lost Angeles, California is shut down through April 19th. But they have an education page on their website. It has recorded Live Stream sessions that provide information from engine concepts to a video on how to clay model, and even the history of the license plate and how to make a balloon car. The Antique Automobile Club of America in Hershey, Pennsylvania is also closed for the time being. However, if you check out their website, click here, you will find that they have a brief synopsis of each of their displays. It’s not as informative as the Petersen Museum, but checking the AACA site out is something that can fill some of your quarantine time.
The NASCAR Hall of Fame has several exhibits. On the website, however, you can check out Dale Earndardt Jr.’s, Glory Road: Champions exhibit Click here. There are snippets of information on the history of past champions.
3 – Binge-Watching Movies
If you find yourself running out of activities and want to watch movies, Motorbiscuit has a list of 25 Car Movies You Need To See. I would also add the Smokey and the Bandit movies. I don’t recall anything about them except that the car was pretty cool and has certainly imprinted on my memories. Prepare the popcorn.
4- IRacing
This past weekend, NASCAR still had a race. Even though their tracks are shut down and everybody is quarantining themselves, NASCAR still managed to find a way to bring excitement to their fans. They did this through virtually through IRacing.
IRacing is a race simulation gaming product with a sophisticated physics model that many racecar drivers use to train. It allows them to familiarize themselves with different tracks on the circuit. These tracks have been scanned right down to the pavement bumps and breaks.
NASCAR used the canceled live track time to provide an event that involved quarantined drivers. It was televised on Sunday with live corner-by-corner commentary by announcers, Mike Joy, Jeff Gordon, and Larry McReynolds. It was a fun event to watch. But, you don’t have to be a spectator. IRacing offers the average person with a computer the opportunity to participate in virtual races with other members, including actual racers of many different leagues globally. 5 – Build A Kit Car
Quarantine has a lot of people stuck in their homes. In a lot of these homes, there are garages that have been set up to work on vehicles. This time at home is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of a lot of free time and build something. Kit cars are real. Some require builders to be handier than others. But, there’s a kit to fit most any budget and experience level. You can build something historic, like a Ford GT replica, or something more unique like a Smyth Performance Ute kit.
Don’t let cabin fever drive you nutty. Use the time to become a more fully rounded auto enthusiast. Use the suggestions above to inspire you and fill that open time while on Coronavirus quarantine. One day, you might even thank yourself for it.
