Many consumers buy a special edition car with the intention of keeping them for many years, if not forever. Whatever the case, holding onto any special edition car in hopes that its value will increase astronomically is a lot like playing the lottery, sometimes you win, but a lot of the times, you lose. That might not be the case for these five cars, as their limited edition statuses could mean a lucrative eBay auction in the future.

2020 Ford Mustang Bullitt

The Ford Mustang is an iconic car in its own right, but slather some Dark Highland Green paint on the panels, add in some performance goodies from the Shelby GT350, and put in a cue-ball style shift knob, and you have yourself a more-iconic Ford Mustang Bullitt edition.

The first Mustang Bullitt appeared as a 2001 model, which paid homage to the 1968 Steve Mcqueen movie “Bullitt,” and has gone through two different generations since. This latest generation has a 5.0-liter V8 engine under the hood that produces 480 horsepower and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. For 2020, the Mustang Bullitt is available with Recaro seats, a magnetic ride suspension, and upgraded B&O sound system, a far cry from the original model.

It’s current MSRP is $48,900, but if you can buy one and not beat on it too much, then it could be worth a lot more in the future.

2008 Honda S2000 CR

We admit, this is a unique (and old) entry to have on this list. However, it was too good to leave out. Back in 2008, Honda released the S2000 CR (Club Racer) and limited it’s production to 1,400 units for 2008 and 2009. It featured an upgraded suspension and steering to the regular S2000, as well as a couple of aero upgrades, a hardtop, and grippier cloth seats.

Back then, it retailed for $36,935, but as you can guess, it’s values have shot up considerably since then. Current examples that are for sale around the nation are priced anywhere between $40,000 and up to $60,000 depending on the condition and mileage. We suspect that any clean ones that will last into next decade will fetch even more.

2018 Subaru WRX STi Type RA

Much like the S2000 CR, the 2018 Subaru WRX STi Type RA does little in terms of adding actual performance. The “RA” stands for “record attempt” It only adds five horsepower (totaling 310 hp), but does add more to regular STi via aero and suspension mods, a center locking differential and Recaro seats.

What makes it more special is that it’s limited to a 500-unit run and retails for $49,855, the highest-priced STi ever. Hopefully, those that buy-in will make their money and then some in the future, if they can keep the car intact.

2021 Honda Civic Type R: Limited Edition

If you haven’t heard of it by now, the 2021 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition is Honda’s special take on the latest Civic Type R. This special edition adds a Phoenix yellow paint job, BBS wheels, and a 28-pound weight reduction via sound deadening removal. The real kicker is that Honda is only producing 600 of these.

So just like the S2000 CR, if you can get your hands on one now, it might pay off handsomely in the future.  

2020 Audi R8 Decennium Edition

Price-wise, this entry is quite a way off from the others, but it’s special just like the rest. The 2020 Audi R8 Decennium Edition is a limited version that celebrates 10 years of the Audi R8. This special version comes with a Mythos Black Metallic paint job and has a bronze intake manifold and 20-inch wheels. Blacked out badging and bronze stitching are also included.

How much does this shortlist of modification cost? Only about $19,095 over the regular 2020 R8, which brings it to a price of $214,995. Staggering, we know, but anyone lucky, or rich, enough to get one of the 50 examples for sale in the U.S. should see the values hold steady, if not increase.

Is it worth it?

Special paint jobs and few other features might not sound like it’s worth the additional coin, but just like the lottery, you never know. We suggest that if you’re interested in any of these cars -or the countless others that we left off this list – buy one. Sooner or later, you may be glad that you did.
