Flat Out’s Two-Door Chevy Silverado K5 Blazer Is Finally Here
We’ve been telling you about how Flat Out is developing a two-door Chevy K5 Blazer SUV based on the current Silverado. Well now, it is finally showing production versions and is beginning to take orders for it. So, did Chevy blow it by naming its latest EV a Blazer instead of the Silverado truck-based two-door Blazer SUV you see here?
Is there a market for a full-size two-door SUV?
We still think there is a market for two-door SUVs, especially seeing the likes of Lamborghini’s Urus and the forthcoming Ferrari Purosang. But for now, the only way you’re going to get a full-size two-door SUV is with the Flat Out K5 Blazer.
The next Chevy Blazer EV is being heavily promoted, and we’re sure you’ll be seeing plenty of them after they get into buyers’ hands. And we really like it. But if you’re more of an original full-size Blazer type, it doesn’t even come close. If you’re that person, you want a truck-like two-door in size, along with body-on-frame construction, and a V8 engine.
That may sound prehistoric to many, but there are a lot of truck owners that drive a full-size truck of some sort, much preferring that archetype. They want the towing capacity and size of a full-size truck, along with the elan of a two-door design. For those folks, it’s all here in the K5 Blazer.
Can you get a Duramax in the K5 Blazer SUV?
Flat Out offers the K5 Blazer in the regular Silverado 1500 configurations, or it will build you a 2500 heavy-duty version. That would include the Duramax diesel engine. It also includes all of the electronic features of a regular Silverado, because Flat Out doesn’t touch those components. That means it still has the latest safety features available from GM.
But that doesn’t mean they only come bone stock. Flat Out will add a supercharger kit for the 5.3-liter V8 engine. There are also a variety of other upgrades offered, including lift kits, better shocks, and various wheel and tire packages.
How much is a Flat Out K5 Blazer
Of course, being somewhat hand-built, the K5 Blazer isn’t cheap. Out the door, we estimate a complete Blazer runs around $120,000. That is based on its Jimmy GMC conversion. However, that does include the donor Silverado or GMC Sierra. You can choose between the two brands as your starting point.
The good news is that Flat Out isn’t flat out cranking these SUVs out the door. This year it will produce around 10 conversions. For 2023 it expects to kick that number up a few notches. So besides having everything you’ve been wanting in an SUV, there is a high likelihood of exclusivity.
The winds are shifting dramatically for trucks. Electrification is the wave of the present, and future. If a traditional Blazer is something you’ve longed for, the Flat Out K5 Blazer is your last chance. To see one in the flesh, they’ll be attending the 2022 SEMA Show in Las Vegas in November.
