Have you ever wondered what happens if you catch a flat tire and just keep driving? Well, the answer depends on the car, but in any case, you can expect more trouble than it’s worth. Harris Automotive, a repair shop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, recently shared some of these “interesting” (and expensive) results. Their customer, a 2020 Honda Civic owner, got a flat on the left rear wheel and kept going.

The scenario goes like this:

The driver gets a flat tire. Instead of pulling over, they continue on down the road. Eventually, the tire separates from its close positioning on the rim. It starts coming apart. As the baggy tire flaps around the wheel, the rubber gets hot…really hot.

The tire rubber sloughs off all over the left rear wheel well area. Ultimately, the wild tire melts the fuel filler neck and a nearby evap system hose.

According to Harris Automotive, these days, the Honda Civic’s fuel filler neck comes with the whole fuel tank. This means the customer turned what would have been a simple flat tire patch or replacement into a much larger repair procedure.

Unfortunately, the MSRP on a 2020 Honda Civic fuel tank is $2,193.09. Looks like if you buy it online from Honda Automotive Parts, you can get it for $1,473.76. Then there’s labor, of course. She might need a rim, too.

The lesson here: If you catch a flat tire, just pull over and call for roadside assistance.
