While families gathered together in Wisconsin this weekend to celebrate at a Christmas parade, what appears to be a red Ford Escape SUV drove into the crowd. At this time, five casualties are known, while more than 40 people are injured. What else is known about this incident involving an SUV?

According to a New York Times article, there is a variety of footage of the incident. While the parade was ongoing, dancers were walking through the streets doing a routine. Crowds are visible on either side of the route. As the dancers move out of frame, a red SUV comes into the frame out of nowhere. While the rest of the floats and vehicles were driving at an average pace, the red SUV moved quickly.

The SUV appears to be Ford Escape, and video footage puts the incident right around 4:40 PM. The driver stormed past various barriers and into the crowd, killing five people in its wake. At the time of publishing, more than 40 people were injured.

The Waukesha Police Department has been offering updates on FaceBook. Around 7:00 PM last night, police reported that the SUV driver was in custody.

The city was working on getting families back together and staging an area for victims of the event to find one another. The Waukesha Police Department is putting on press conferences to get the information out as quickly as possible. Some roads in the area remain closed while the investigation continues. There will be another press conference at the local firehouse sometime this morning.

Some people are arguing that this incident was due to the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict. One person, Darrell Edward Brooks Jr., appears to be the suspect in the incident. He also goes by the name Mathboi Fly on the internet. Waukesha is about an hour away from Kenosha, where the Rittenhouse verdict was read on Friday. There is no confirmation this incident is related to that.

Video footage from social media shows the SUV driver plowing through a group of dancers in white hats before continuing down the road and disappearing. Other photos show a Ford Escape with front-end damage parked in a driveway not far from the incident.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. During the most recent press conference, the city’s police chief, Dan Thompson, said that the investigation was “very fluid” still. He noted that the scene was safe, and the SUV driver was no longer a threat to the public.

Corey Montiho, a member of the Waukesha School Board, told the Huffington Post that his daughter’s dance team was the one in the video. Another local group, the Milwaukee Archdiocese, said one of the priests was injured in the event. The Milwaukee Dancing Grannies were also in attendance but had not confirmed if anyone from the group was hurt.

This local Christmas parade has been going on for 50 years and had taken a break during the pandemic. The City of Waukesha chose the theme of “comfort and joy” for this year’s parade.
