The Ford F-150 Hybrid Has a Lower Fuel Economy Than Expected
Don’t forget about the Ford F-150 Hybrid. You can save fuel without going totally electric with the F-150 Lightning. However, let’s see how fuel-efficient the 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid really is. It could be thirstier than people initially thought.
2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid MPG estimates
The 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid is supposed to get an EPA-estimated 25 mpg in the city and up to 25 mpg on the highway, which is excellent for a powerful large truck. It can provide up to a 700-mile range between fill ups.
The gas-powered Ford F-150 models get about an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and up to 24 mpg on the highway. So, upgrading to the F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid has the potential to help you save.
However, the team at Edmunds received different results. After using the truck for about six months and driving over 10,000 miles, they only got about 19.3 miles per gallon. This is great for a full-size truck, but it falls short of 25 mpg.
The 19.3 figure excludes towing and performance testing. Also, the team only got up to 23 mpg twice. This is a little disappointing because upgrading to the PowerBoost Hybrid costs over $4,000.
How much power does the F-150 Hybrid have?
The 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid has a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine and a 35 kW electric motor to crank out 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
With the gas-powered F-150, you can opt for the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine for 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque.
When properly equipped, the Ford F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid can tow up to 12,700 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,210 lbs. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.7 seconds.
The Regular F-150 can tow up to 14,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,238 lbs. So, the Hybrid isn’t far behind. Also, the Ford F-150 Lightning can tow up to 10,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,000 lbs.
The gas-powered F-150 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.6 seconds, but the Lightning reaches 60 mph in about 4.0 seconds.
Is the 2022 F-150 Hybrid worth buying?
Yes, the 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid is an excellent truck to consider, even if it falls short of its estimated fuel economy. It provides a smooth, fast, and comfortable performance that out aces the Ford F-150 Raptor.
Plus, you can’t forget about the Power Pro Onboard Generator that can power a campsite for up to 72 hours or even your home. We used it to power up a camper. We had lights, the oven, the radio, and AC going all at once.
The Hybrid engine is also pretty quiet and entertaining. The regenerative brakes display how much power is returned to the battery with each stop, making it feel like a game. Can you stop smoothly to get the best score?
Despite falling short on fuel estimates, the Ford F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid provides an excellent performance, stout towing capabilities, and the ability to power multiple tools. Give it another chance.
