The Ford F-150 Lightning Can’t Catch the Rivian R1T
The official numbers are in, and the Rivian R1T is currently the EV king as the Ford F-150 Lightning attempts to keep up. In a shocking turn of events, the 2022 Rivian R1T seems to be the more popular choice against the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning.
The 2022 Rivian R1T outsells the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
The electric pickup truck battle is in full swing, and the 2022 Rivian R1T is currently in the lead. It has more sales than the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning. According to Auto Guide, the R1T sold about 4,401 units during the second quarter of the year.
This is compared to the 2,296 Ford F-150 Lightning units that were delivered. However, Rivian has a bit of an unfair advantage because the F-150 Lightning wasn’t available for the entire second quarter.
Rivian has sold nearly 7,969 units since R1T production began and remains on target with the goal of selling 25,000 units this year. The Ford F-150 Lightning wants to sell at least 15,000 models this year but has over 120,000 reservations lined up.
Some Rivian R1T reservation holders have been annoyed by shipping delays due to manufacturing and supply chain issues. However, the F-150 Lightning has only experienced a minor recall and remains on track.
Is the R1T better than the F-150 Lighting?
We wouldn’t exactly say that the 2022 Rivian R1T is better than the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning or vice versa. Both trucks have unique features that could meet different needs among a diverse group of buyers.
For example, the R1T is smaller than the F-150 Lightning and is more of a high-performance luxury truck. But the F-150 Lightning has more cargo space to get things done and has a basic, more affordable work truck version.
You can get started with a Rivian R1T for about $67,500, while the higher trim increases the price to about $73,000. The Ford F-150 Lightning starts at $39,974, and top-spec trims are over $67,500.
The standard-range F-150 Lightning provides 452 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque with about 230 miles of range. The extend-range model cranks out 580 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque with an EPA-estimated 320-mile range.
The Rivian R1T starts off with 600 hp and 260 miles of range. You can upgrade to 835 hp and 908 lb-ft of torque with an estimated 314 miles of range.
Does the F-150 Lightning or R1T have better features?
Both the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning and 2022 Rivian R1T are loaded with value. The Lightning is a little more traditional with a classic look. Plus, it can connect to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Rivian R1T features a pass-through gear tunnel, and both trucks have spacious front trunks to take advantage of.
While the F-150 Lightning can charge campsites with the Pro Power Onboard Generator, the R1T is available with a fold-out kitchen.
The R1T can tow up to 11,000 lbs, while the Lightning can only tow up to 10,000 lbs. But the F-150 Lightning has much more cargo space for tools and camping gear.
Perhaps the F-150 Lightning will catch up to the Rivian R1T soon, but deciding between these trucks is a tough choice. Both have plenty of pros and cons to consider.
