Recently, the Blue Oval was forced to recall a number of F-150 Lightning trucks due to a battery pack issue. And now, we know the root of the problem and why this pickup truck has an increased risk of fire.
Is there a recall on the Ford F-150 Lightning?
Currently, the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning does have a recall on it. This recall was initially announced last week, and only certain models are impacted. If your truck is affected by the recall, you should receive a notification of the action steps you need to take.
Unfortunately, the Ford Lightning has not been without problems since it was introduced. But that is really not too surprising, considering this is a new electric truck. Although it is based on the gas-powered F-150, adding an electric powertrain certainly opens up opportunities for new issues.
The 2023 Ford Lightning has an increased risk of fire
According to Ford Authority, the 2023 F-150 Lightning has an increased fire risk. This risk is caused by an electrical short-circuit when the battery is near a full charge or fully charged. A battery short-circuit can increase the chance of a fire occurring, which is something that you don’t want happening to your electric truck.
The Blue Oval is not aware of any injuries or accidents reported because of this problem. But when something like this happens, it is important for an automotive company to issue a recall. That way, the problem can be corrected before something bad happens.
How long is the waiting list for an F-150 Lightning?
If you’re interested in an electric F-150, you’ve likely noticed that you can’t just go to a Ford dealership and buy one. With supply chain issues and high demand, the F-150 Lightning has a serious waitlist. Some folks may have to wait until 2024 to actually take delivery of their EV.
Considering how popular the regular F-150 is, it’s not surprising to see the electric version being a hot commodity. It actually looks like the Ford Lightning is attracting a new kind of buyer. The demographic looks younger than a traditional truck owner and tends to do more truck stuff like hauling cargo in the bed.
Who fixes a truck recall?
Recalls are handled by dealerships, and they are usually fixed at no cost to the customer. In the case of the F-150 Lightning, impacted models are those built between January 20th, 2023, and January 26th, 2023. So far, just 18 trucks have been affected, and dealers will replace the high-voltage battery pack.
It is unlikely that this is the last recall Ford’s electric truck will see. As more models are produced and delivered, new issues could arise. Even though some F-150 Lightnings have been recalled, it remains an extremely popular EV. Showing that electric vehicles don’t have to be boring cars or crossovers; pickups can be electrified too.
