The Ford F-150 Lightning Could Be Copying the Chevy Silverado EV
The battle between electric trucks is still heating up, but the Ford F-150 Lightning did get a jump on the competition. The Chevy Silverado EV isn’t far behind with its unique features. Features that the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning might already be copying.
The Ford F-150 Lightning patents a pass-through cab option
According to Ford Authority, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning might be working on something that the 2023 Chevy Silverado EV already has. This feature is a pickup bed to cabin pass-through system.
Reportedly, the patent was filed on December 3, 2020, and published on June 9, 2022. The Chevrolet Silverado EV will already come with a pass-through cab system when it arrives in 2024. So, it seems like the Lighting is spying on the competition despite beating other electric trucks to market.
The patent images depict a truck with a hinged door on the rear of the cab. It lifts open and swings outward, providing access to the cab or bed. A second panel can be pulled out and used as a work surface.
The Chevy Silverado EV has a midgate system. You can roll the rear window up and fold the back seats down. Then the back of the cab folds over them to provide more storage space.
This increases the truck bed from 5.5-feet to over 9.0 feet of storage length. With the tailgate down and the use of the material stop, you get 10’10” of length to work with.
How do the F-150 Lightning and Silverado EV compare?
Both the 2022 Ford F-150 Lighting and 2024 Chevy Silverado EV could have a pass-through cab system, but let’s see which option has the most power for towing and hauling.
The standard-range F-150 Lightning has 426 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque. It has an electric range of about 230 miles on a single charge. With the extended-range battery, you get 580 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque with a 320-mile range.
When properly equipped, the F-150 Lightning can tow up to 10,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,235 lbs.
With the standard Chevy Silverado EV WT model, you get 510 hp and 625 lb-ft of torque. The range hasn’t been officially announced for the model. The Chevy Silverado RST packs a punch with 664 hp and 780 lb-ft of torque. It’s expected to have a 400-mile range.
The Silverado EV can tow up to 10,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,300 lbs. So, it isn’t as strong as the Lightning, despite having more power.
Which electric truck has more value?
You can get started with a 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning for about $39,974. Pricing for the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV WT hasn’t been released, but Chevrolet shared that it will begin under $40,000.
The extended-range F-150 Lightning increases the price to about $74,169. The fully-loaded Chevy Silverado EV RST First Edition starts at about $106,000. But cheaper models may come out later.
Both options come with innovative tech and luxury features such as leather upholstery, ventilated seats, multi-purpose tailgates, digital gauge clusters, wireless phone chargers, and more.
We have to wait a little longer to learn about the official pricing and specs for the Silverado EV. Until then, it seems like you can save with the F-150 Lightning. However, the pass-through cab isn’t available yet.
