The Ford F-150 Lightning Just Replaced the Rivian R1T
The Ford F-150 Lightning came in and told the Rivian R1T to move without any warning. The electric truck battle is getting pretty intense as the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning replaces the 2022 Rivian R1T as the Truck of the Year.
The Ford F-150 Lightning takes Truck of the Year from the Rivian R1T
MotorTrend has spoken, and the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning serves as their Truck of the Year. It replaced the 2022 Rivian R1T, which one this prestigious title last year. While the R1T was the first electric truck, the F-150 Lightning is slowly catching up and could surpass its success.
Part of the Lightning’s success is related to its style. It has a more traditional look that attracts regular truck buyers. Rivals like the Rivian R1T and the Tesla Cybertruck (if it ever comes out) have a wild, futuristic style.
The 2022 R1T and other more expensive options are marketed as lifestyle trucks that can fuel outdoorsy hobbies. But the 2022 Lightning attracts the traditional buyer by being seen as an option for work, daily commuting, and families.
With the F-150 Lightning, you can tow up to 10,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,200 lbs. The Rivian R1T maxes out at 11,000 lbs and can carry up to 1,384 lbs.
While the R1T can tow a bit more, the F-150 Lightning makes it easier with more cargo space to work with. Plus, it has onboard scales, trailering camera views, pro trailer backup assist, and live range updates.
Does the 2022 F-150 have more value?
Even with the recent price hikes, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning provides savings compared to rivals. The $12,000 increase is disappointing, and the Pro model now starts at $51,974. But building a comparable gas-powered F-150 Lightning costs a bit more and has less power.
The Rivian R1T starts at $67,500, making it more expensive for people to switch to green energy. Both remember to look for possible federal and state tax credits with all EV options.
With the F-150 Lightning, dual-motor all-wheel drive and an electronically locking rear differential are standard. Plus, you get eight 120-volt outlets to power job sites.
Each model has a 12.0-inch infotainment screen with built-in navigation and route planning, allowing drivers to find charging stations during trips.
Standard safety features include blind-spot warning, lane-keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking, reverse parking sensors, and automatic high beams. For comfort and convenience, each model has well-bolstered bucket seats and a full center console.
Does the F-150 Lightning offer unique features?
The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning has pretty neat features to help battle the Rivian R1T. The R1T’s gear tunnel and optional built-in camp kitchen are pretty cool.
However, the F-150 Lightning has SuperCruise hands-free driving tech. When it’s available, the Lightning will adjust its speed, change lanes, and stop at red lights for you. Just be sure to look ahead at the road and keep your hands on the steering wheel.
Also, the 2022 Lightning has the Power Pro OnBoard Generator to power campsites, tailgate parties, other EVs, and even your home.
The frame and ladder build that’s paired with a rear multi-link suspension provides the best riding truck in its class with the ability to handle tons of weight, even while off-roading.
You can remotely set your vehicle to warm up and charge based on your schedule for convenience and to avoid wasting energy.
The F-150 Lightning is a well-rounded option that attracts more traditional truck buyers who need them more for just outdoor adventures.
