Ford has been hitting it out of the park lately, especially with new electric vehicles. Thanks to the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Ford Mustang Mach-E. This electric truck and electric SUV have some similarities and a lot of differences, but what about the battery?

The Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E battery types

First off, Ford offers a variety of battery sizes for the electric vehicles in its lineup. The 2022 F-150 Lightning battery was slated to come in two different sizes: a 98.0kWh battery or a 131.0kWh battery. The 98.0kWh battery is the standard range battery pack capable of getting 230 miles of range. The 131.0kWh is an extended range battery pack that Ford says will give the Lightning truck 300 miles of range. The top-level trim for the 2022 F-150 Lightning Platinum will have the extended range battery but will only get 300 miles of range.

There are two different battery types for the 2022 Mustang Mach-E electric SUV, depending on the trim. The Mach-E is available in five different trim levels. Select, Premium, California Route 1, GT, GT Performance, and the Mach-E Ice White Edition. There is a standard range battery and an extended range battery, depending on which version the buyer chooses.

The standard range battery is 70 kWh and comes with the rear-wheel-drive (RDW) or all-wheel drive (AWD) Mach-E. The extended range battery is 91 kWh and is also available with RWD and AWD Mach-E’s.

The Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck versus the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV

One of the main differences in the battery likely has to do with weight and towing capacity. The Ford F-150 Lightning is an electric truck, and truck owners expect to be able to tow. The targeted maximum payload for the Lightning is 2,000 pounds with the standard range battery. That decreases to 18,000 pounds with the extended battery.

With the Max Trailer Tow Package added to the F-150 Lightning, the standard range battery has a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds. That increases to 10,000 pounds with the extended range battery. The range goes down with towing, but Ford hasn’t given exact range loss numbers yet.

Currently, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is not rated to tow. It does come with a tow hitch, but Ford doesn’t endorse towing with the electric SUV. In conclusion, the battery that the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning and the Ford Mustang Mach-E use is similar, but not the same.

A home charger is going to be your best bet for either electric vehicle

While you might want to occasionally charge up at a public charging station, it makes a lot of sense to have a home charger installed. This will allow you to charge your Ford F-150 Lightning or Mustang Mach-E during the night when electricity is the cheapest. Most of the apps allow you to schedule charging for the middle of the night at off-peak hours.

Charging at home will ensure you can leave the house with a full charge each day to take advantage of your electric truck or electric SUVs range. There are a variety of home charging solutions out there. Your area might offer a rebate for installing a charger, too. It is suggested that you get the charger installed by a qualified electrician to avoid issues.
