Is the 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty a Diesel? Yes and no. Yes, the 6.7-liter PowerStroke Turbo Diesel V8 is an option. But no, it does not come standard in the F-250. The standard engine is the 6.2-liter SOHC flex-fuel V8. However, the PowerStroke is what you’ll mostly find as the engine stabbed into the 2022 F-250.

So let’s look at everything that the F-250 offers in the way of engines. There are three offerings, the 6.2-liter gasoline V8, the 6.7-liter PowerStroke, and the 7.3-liter PFI gasoline V8. The 6.2-liter gas engine is hooked to a TorqShift G six-speed automatic transmission.

If you want torque, the best-in-class 6.7-liter PowerStroke V8 Turbo Diesel offers 475 hp and an incredible 1,050 lb-ft of torque. It can tow up to 20,000 lbs towing with a gooseneck and features selectable drive modes including Normal, Slippery, Tow/Haul, Eco, and Deep Sand/Snow. Backing it is a 10-speed TorqShift automatic transmission.

The last of the big V8s is the 7.3-liter PFI engine. It’s the largest engine available in any pickup class. It features port injection with 430 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. Also, a 10-speed automatic transfers the power. Every 7.3-liter application includes those selectable driving modes. Towing capacity varies from 15,000 lbs to 19,500 lbs.

Chevrolet’s Silverado 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8 has similar, though slightly lower torque and horsepower numbers. The Silverado towing capacity falls slightly under those numbers. Compared to Ford’s 18,500 lbs, the Silverado 2500 with the fifth wheel has a maximum towing capacity of 14,800 lbs.

What’s the base engine in an F-250?

With the base Ford 6.2-liter V8 in the F-250, it packs 385 hp, versus the Silverado 2500 base engine at 360 hp. Again, the Silverado lags slightly behind the F-250. But the numbers aren’t too disparate. So it really comes down to interior appointments, styling, and options.

If you’re weighing the advantages and disadvantages of the Ram 2500, Silverado 2500, Ford F-250, and Toyota Tundra, you need to test them out. Do your homework before you pick a dealership. Then, test-drive each of them. That is if you can find any sitting on lots.

Would ordering a Ford F-250 be a better way to go?

As you’re well aware, dealerships are almost empty these days. But finding an F-250 or Ram 2500 will be easier than finding a Silverado 1500 or Ford F-150. Knowing that you want the medium-duty truck means you’re one step closer to finding the right truck for you.

You should also check online to see what deals, if any, are being offered by manufacturers. And also, see if the price when you order is better than the prices you’ve seen at dealerships. Dealers can sometimes add markups to vehicles that are desirable, and also in short supply. Some buyers will step up and pay whatever. But ordering a truck, though it takes longer, might save you from those dealer markups.
