The Ford F-Series Dominated as the Best Selling Vehicles of 2020 In Over Half the Country
The top-selling pickup truck in the country has been Ford F-Series pickup trucks for quite some time. In fact, you’d have to go back 44 years to find a time where a different pickup sold more. Just because it dominates the pickup truck segment doesn’t mean it can beat every other class of vehicle, right? According to Visual Capitalist, wrong. Visual Capitalist broke down the highest vehicle sales in the country state-by-state to display which one sold the most in each location. Just like the pickup truck segment sales in the United States in the last 44 years, the Ford F-Series dominated. More than half the states in the country sold more F-Series pickups than any other vehicle.
In how many states does the Ford F-Series dominate?
As you can see from the graphic, the Ford F-Series dominates the entire country. 60% of all US states bought more Ford F-Series pickup trucks than any other vehicle. That’s 30 total states where F-Series are the most popular. Even more surprising, an additional 10 states’ most popular vehicle is a different brand of pickup. Either the Chevrolet Silverado or Ram pickups boost pickup trucks numbers up to 39. Then way out in the ocean, the best-selling vehicle in Hawaii is the Toyota Tacoma. That leaves only 10 states where some brand of a pickup truck is not the best selling vehicle. It’s safe to say America absolutely loves its pickup trucks.
Where are all the SUVs?
The best-selling vehicle segment in America is the crossover SUV, according to Statista. Though by looking at the graphic, you wouldn’t be able to tell. SUV numbers aren’t bad, but pickup trucks clearly dominate most of the country. SUVs take up the next highest number of states after the pickup, with nine total including Washington D.C. The only states in the entire country to sell mostly cars is California’s Honda Civic, and Florida’s Toyota Corolla. What’s even more surprising is that the Toyota Camry has been the best-selling car in America every year from 1997 to 2020. Yet, there isn’t a single state that sold more Camry models than anything else.
Though Ford F-Series and the pickup truck in general dominates state by state, it is understandable that SUVs actually sell more units. Looking at the states selling mostly trucks, there are a lot of midwestern, and other lower population locations. These areas sell mostly trucks regardless, but there aren’t a lot of people living there. Owners using trucks for farming, working, or other functional purposes likely sell a lot of truck inventory. In more populated areas like New Jersey and New York, you see the highest-selling vehicle is an SUV. Though it doesn’t matter for this particular state-by-state statistic, the overall sales are highly impacted. New Jersey’s 8.882 million people buy a lot more state-leading SUVs than North Dakota’s 762,062 people buy trucks. There are plenty of other instances like this, which is why the crossover SUV sells more country-wide than trucks do. Even though trucks dominate over half the states.
Which brands sell the most state-by-state?
The best-selling brand state-by-state is Ford due to the domination of the Ford F-Series sales. 60% of states buy Ford over every other brand. The next highest is Toyota with its RAV4, Tacoma, and Corolla claiming eight states for the Japanese automaker. That’s still a respectable number of states, though it doesn’t seem like much compared to Ford’s 30. Honda is the only other brand with non-pickup trucks winning a state. It has three states selling the most CR-Vs and California is the only state in the country that sold mostly Honda Civics.
It’s no secret that Americans love pickup trucks. Though due to population variations from state to state, crossovers are still better selling. However, if the contest is to sell the most vehicles in the most different states, the contest isn’t even close. 30 out of 50 states would rather buy a Ford F-Series truck than any other vehicle. With those kinds of numbers, it’s safe to say that the Ford F-150 dominated as the best-selling vehicle of 2020 in over half the country.
