Bigger isn’t always better, especially when it comes time to pay the bills. Many people have made the mistake of thinking they can afford to pay the monthly payment for a vehicle, without considering the cost of insurance. A rule of thumb is to remember that high sticker prices often include high insurance payments. This is especially true with trucks.

The bigger a truck is, the higher your insurance will most likely be, as Insure points out. So why are trucks more expensive to insure than other vehicles, exactly? And which trucks cost the most?

Why are trucks so expensive?

Whether you’re just trying to fill up, or getting repairs, one thing is all too clear: trucks cost a lot of money. The 2020 Nissan Titan is currently the most expensive truck in America as far as the initial price tag goes, but it’s got plenty of competition. Many trucks can easily cost as much as $90,000 or more.

Still, why do trucks cost so much? One of the biggest reasons is the demand. A few short years ago, pickups were something seen on the lone farm, being used for work.

That’s changed, and now many drivers prefer trucks to sedans. Other factors include the size of the truck, how many gadgets are on it, whether or not it’s 4WD, and the price tag.

While Ford isn’t known for being the most expensive automaker out there, its heavy-duty trucks are. The F-450 is the most expensive truck to insure at the moment, with a whopping average annual rate of $2,350 according to Insure. Consider the fact that the most basic F-450 trim starts around $50,000, and it’s easy to see why.

The F-450 might just be worth it, however. It’s a one-ton truck that comes with both a diesel engine and 4WD. The F-450 also comes with tons of features like a trailer tow camera and backup assist, heated seats, a wireless charging pad, Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), and Forward Collision Warning.

The Ford F-350 isn’t far behind

The F-350 doesn’t cost as much as its older brother the F-450, but it’s close. It costs owners an average of $2,327 a year to insure. The sticker price for the base trim level is around $35,000.

The Ram 2500 is an expensive truck to insure

The Dodge Ram 2500 also costs quite a bit to insure. In fact, it costs around $2,149 annually according to the data from Insure. More high-end trims will cost around $70,000.

The Ford F-250 costs about the same as a Ram 2500 to insure

The fourth vehicle on this list costs only three dollars less a year on average than the Ram 2500 with an annual rate of $2,146. It can tow up to 20,000 lbs, and comes with a 4WD turbo diesel engine that can produce 475 hp.

The F-250 has a starting price of around $34,000. It has some dismal safety scores, however, so you might want to think long and hard before purchasing such an expensive truck.

The Ram 1500 has some pretty expensive insurance costs

The Ram 1500 is the cheapest on the list with a starting price of around $29,000. It was the first half-ton truck on the list. In spite of the fact that it’s the cheapest, the Ram 1500 still costs $2,113 to insure each year.

When examining insurance rate data, it is important to remember a few things. For one, each policy is different and your rate will vary based on factors like the deductible you choose or types of coverages you want. Your driving record, age, and many other factors also impact your insurance rate.
