For years the Toyota Tacoma has been the most popular mid-size truck. It still is, but a smaller truck just drove right past it. The Ford Maverick is the new small truck king in town as it outsells the Tacoma.

First of all, good job to the Toyota Tacoma for continuing to be the most popular mid-size truck. However, the Ford Maverick is jumping past it from the compact truck segment.

For years, only full-size trucks were able to beat the Tacoma until a smaller opponent arrived. The Maverick debuted in 2022 and quickly ramped up production. It’s the first small truck to beat it in years.

According to Top Speed, the Toyota Tacoma has 69,437 sales from January to June 2024. It’s the best-selling mid-size truck.

The Tacoma beats the Chevrolet Colorado which has 41,823 sales, the Nissan Frontier, and its 39,964 sales, and the Jeep Gladiator with its wimpy 23,480 sales. The Ford Ranger didn’t make it on the list of best-selling trucks for 2024.

So far, the Ford Maverick is the fifth best-selling truck of the year. It has racked up 90,375 sales between January and June of this year.

It actually came ahead of the Toyota Tundra with 78,454 sales. It’s currently outselling the Toyota Tacoma by 20,938 units. Also, the Ford F-150 is in the top spot with 352,406 sales from the first half of 2024.

However, I can’t say that compact trucks are beating mid-size options in general. Unfortunately, the Hyundai Santa Cruz didn’t make the list of the top-selling trucks.

Buyers are attracted to the low entry-level price of the Maverick. The 2024 Maverick has an MSRP of $23,920. The 2024 Tacoma starts at $31,500. That’s a difference of $7,580.

But there are another six months in 2024 for sales figures to change. The Tacoma could continue to be the most popular mid-size truck while catching the Maverick.
