The Ford Maverick Hybrid Could Get an Engine Upgrade
There’s no denying that the Ford Maverick Hybrid is one popular truck. Demand for this tiny fuel-sipping truck is out of control, and supply can’t keep up. But that doesn’t mean the Ford Maverick Hybrid has to slow down. It could get even better with a new hybrid powertrain.
What engine is in the Ford Maverick Hybrid?
Currently, the 2023 and 2024 Ford Maverick Hybrid use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s paired with an electric motor to generate 191 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque. These figures may seem low, but the Maverick Hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds.
The Maverick Hybrid can only tow up to 2,000 lbs, but it’s limited due to not being able to be paired with all-wheel drive or the towing package. The Ford Escape Hybrid and Maverick Hybrid share the same engine but use different electric motors.
That’s why the Maverick Hybrid can’t be paired with the Escape’s AWD system. The Ford Bronco Sport is also based on the Escape but doesn’t have a hybrid variant. But there could be a solution in the works.
Rumors suggest a Ford Bronco Sport Hybrid and rugged Maverick model are in the works. The Lincoln Nautilus Hybrid has a new 2.0-liter inline-four engine that’s paired with 310 hp. It could give the Maverick Hybrid the extra boost it needs.
The current Maverick engine is built in Mexico, but the Nautilus powertrain is built in Canada. It seems like things could be moved around to make space for a new Maverick Hybrid.
The new hybrid powertrain uses the same timing technology as the Atkinson Cycle hybrid, only it can be paired with AWD. Ford CEO Jim Farley is currently working to expand hybrid variants and could improve the Maverick during this process.
Is the 2024 Maverick Hybrid available?
Yes, the 2024 Ford Maverick Hybrid is currently available. You can place an order online or with the help of a local Ford dealership. But it’s unclear how long supplies will last, so you may want to make haste.
The order banks have been open for weeks, but the 2023 models sold out in roughly 48 hours. Perhaps Ford followed with increasing Maverick production to meet the incredibly high demand.
Many plants across North America have been remodeled to boost production. The Maverick is built in Hermosillo, Mexico. The plant was expanded to add a night shift with 1,100 additional workers and 5,000 indirect workers.
2024 Maverick production is expected to begin on October 16, 2023. So, hopefully, things will remain on track. However, supply chain constraints, rising inflation, and the United Auto Workers strike could cause delays.
How many mpg does the Maverick Hybrid get?
The Ford Maverick Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 42 mpg in the city and up to 33 mpg on the highway. The fuel economy is higher in the city because frequent stops help the regenerative brakes juice up.
Also, the gas-powered Maverick with AWD gets an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and up to 29 mpg on the highway. The hybrid engine used to be standard, but now the gas-powered option is. You can upgrade to the hybrid powertrain for $1,500.
