It’s no secret that the Ford Maverick Hybrid is hot, hot, hot! These new little trucks are selling faster than hot cakes. However, when we say the 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid is hot, we mean it literally. There is a new recall out because the Maverick and Escape Hybrids are bursting into flames. But are engine problems a concern? 

Recall alert: The 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid might catch on fire 

Add another recall to the list, 2022 – 2022 Ford Escape, Lincoln Corsair, and 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid and Plug-in hybrid models might catch on fire. This comes after the Ford Explorer, and Lincoln Aviator recall that’s also related to fire. 

According to Reuters, during the event of an engine failure, large quantities of engine oil and fuel vapor could leak onto hot vehicle components, increasing the risk of igniting fires under the hood. 

So far, Ford is aware of 23 fires related to this problem, but no injuries have been reported. The problem could be related to a crankshaft machining problem that causes the engines to fail. 

Ford will benign notifying owners at risk by August 8. If your Ford Maverick, Escape, or Lincoln Corsair is affected, then you will need to visit a local Ford Dealership for service. 

Technicians will drill holes in an under-shield hood and adjust the active grille shutters to allow more airflow. This should reduce temperatures around the oil, fuel vapors, and ignition points. 

Does the Maverick have engine problems? 

We’re glad there is a solution for the 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid and potential fire risks. But it seems like Ford skipped over something important. The fires could be related to a camshaft machine problem that leads to engine failure. 

Does that mean the Ford Maverick has an engine problem that needs to be corrected? Maverick owners have reported transmission shudders, shifting at high revs, and jerking when the vehicle switches from gas to hybrid mode. 

Some owners have reported the smell of burning plastic as their Maverick heats up. Also, the catalytic converter glows red hot. It could have too much air and fuel, or it could turn red due to misfiring. 

Other drivers are concerned about the engine because the exhaust manifold is integrated into the cylinder head. Excessive heat could cause the manifold to crack, but these types of issues should have a solution by now. 

How many miles will a Ford Maverick last?

It’s a little early to determine how reliable the 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid is. This new truck still needs to be tested on the pavement. However, it shares a lot in common with the Ford Escape Hybrid. 

With proper care and maintenance, the Ford Escape Hybrid can make it between 200,000 to 300,000 miles. That’s a pretty good sign. 

Consumer Reports gave the Maverick an average reliability rating, while the Escape got a below-average rating. The scores are based on the issues reported by owners in previous model years. 

But the Maverick’s rating is also based on similar vehicles because this is its first year out. The Maverick Hybrid needs to be tested a little more before determining its reliability. We will keep tracking it for potential engine problems.
