The 2022 Ford Maverick is well-known for its standard hybrid engine. In fact, it is the first pickup truck to make a hybrid powertrain standard. But with recent testing from Car and Driver, it appears that this engine is not as efficient as it claims, but that does not mean it still isn’t impressive. In a world where even the full-size F-150 can come with a hybrid engine, it isn’t too surprising that Ford outfitted its new compact truck with one. But, just how efficient is this engine in the real world?

How efficient is the Ford Maverick hybrid?

The Ford Maverick with the hybrid engine has an EPA estimated 42 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. This makes for an estimated combined 37 mpg. It is a 2.5-liter engine with two electric motors and has been borrowed from the Ford Escape Hybrid. It makes 191 horsepower and 155 pound-foot of torque.

Because of the sizing of the new Ford Maverick truck, this is fairly ample power. And for most drivers, the efficiency will be a huge plus. Especially for those who are new to truck ownership. Additionally, when equipped with this engine, this pickup truck can haul up to 1,500 pounds and tow up to 2,000 lbs. So, if you don’t plan on hauling or towing heavy equipment, it may be more than enough for your needs.

What is the real-world efficiency of this small truck?

As a compact truck, the Ford Maverick has serious efficiency.

According to Car and Driver, the Maverick did not achieve the expected mpg rating. With their 75-mph highway test, the Ford Maverick pickup truck got around 30 mpg. With city driving, it hit over 40 mpg.

While this isn’t as impressive as the EPA rating, it is still impressive to see a truck that is able to achieve over 40 mpg. Especially with the current price of gas. This is also combined with the relative affordability of the Maverick. As a small truck, it can be had for around $20,000. Which makes its pricing closer to that of a compact car than a usable pickup truck.

Full-size truck buyers are not likely to consider the Maverick pickup truck. It uses unibody construction and just doesn’t have the capability to do what a larger truck can. That said, when properly equipped it can tow up to 4,000 lbs and does offer available all-wheel drive.

Better yet, it rides on a proven platform. This gives it a more comfortable and controlled ride than body-on-frame options. Plus, with its sizing, this compact truck is at-home in urban environments. And it will likely be easier to find a parking spot in tight conditions.

Despite Car and Driver reporting the Ford Maverick is not as efficient as it claims, it is still a small truck worth considering for first-time truck buyers or those who want something capable of light adventuring. It doesn’t hurt that this pickup truck has attractive styling too. Others must feel the same way, as Ford had to place a pause on orders.
