Can you imagine if a compact truck started to beat mid-size options? Well, it’s already happening! The Ford Maverick has already jumped passed larger rivals like the Chevrolet Colorado and the Toyota Tacoma could be next.

The Ford Maverick could beat the Toyota Tacoma

While many trucks have been facing declines, the Ford Maverick is still benefiting from explosive growth. It could even knock the 2024 Toyota Tacoma off its throne soon.

Nothing in the mid-size segment has come close to catching the Tacoma for years. However, the Maverick is gaining on its tail.

In May of 2023, the Maverick sold 6,965 models, then in May 2024, it moved 13,616 units which is a 95.5% increase.

In May of 2023, the Toyota Tacoma sold 20,487 units and in May of 2024, it only moved 17,530 models. My source didn’t do the math for me on this one, but it’s clearly a decrease.

The Tacoma only sold 3,914 more trucks than the Maverick in May and I think it has a fair chance to pull ahead next month.

Ford has been focusing on ramping up Maverick production to meet its crazy high demand. Meanwhile, the Tacoma was recently redesigned, so the factory had to prepare to build the new truck.

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma off-roading

Production of the Tacoma just moved to Mexico and that might slow deliveries down a bit. Also, some die-hard Toyota fans are upset about the turbo engine and the higher prices.

The 2023 Tacoma had an MSRP of $28,600 and the 2024 model starts at $31,500. The 2024 Maverick has an MSRP of $23,920.

While the Maverick isn’t set up to go off-roading like the Tacoma, most people don’t get trucks for off-roading. Also, with rising inflation and high interest rates, people have been abandoning expensive trucks for cheaper options.

A lot of people suggest never buying a new car during its first model year, so people might be waiting to see how the new Tacoma holds up. If it’s anything like the new Toyota Tundra, then it’s in trouble.

But the Maverick has an excellent reliability rating, of 85 out of 100 from J.D.Power, which is great. The 2024 Tacoma doesn’t have a reliability rating, yet. People could trust in the Maverick for a while until the Tacoma gets a few ratings.
