It’s no secret that the 2022 Ford Maverick has been an extremely popular truck. It has sold so well that Ford was forced to place a pause on orders for its compact pickup. Apparently, things for the Maverick could soon change. Rumors have been circulating that Ford could be in the works of building a plug-in hybrid truck. As a PHEV, the Ford Maverick would be an even more efficient pickup, and that would certainly be appreciated.

Is the Ford Maverick electric?

Currently, the 2022 Ford Maverick is offered with a standard hybrid engine, but it is not electric. Apparently, spy shots have been seen that may change that though. As a PHEV, the Maverick would gain the ability to drive with all-electric power.

According to Motor1, the base weight of this version has increased to 3,946 pounds. That weight increase makes sense if the Maverick has more equipment added to it. Now, a PHEV Maverick has not been confirmed by Ford. But as the brand explores electric vehicles, it is viable that more models could benefit from this technology.

Does the 2022 Maverick Hybrid have all-wheel drive?

While the Ford Maverick does offer available AWD, the hybrid model cannot come equipped with power going to all four wheels. This is fairly disappointing for those who want the more efficient engine option but still have the ability to handle various climates and conditions. In order to get an AWD Maverick, buyers must opt for the more powerful engine option.

In the future, that could change though. The hybrid Maverick has been a popular small truck, and it’s hard to see Ford not finding success by giving it AWD. But perhaps the blue oval wanted to reserve that feature for its turbocharged engine.

Is the 2022 Maverick a good truck?

As a compact pickup truck, the Ford Maverick has found some great success. It’s been so popular that buying one feels like an almost impossible task. Ford is expected to open up orders for the 2023 Maverick this August, so hopefully more buyers can get their hands on one.

Although the Maverick is a small truck, it does offer legitimate capability. When properly equipped, this truck can tow up to 4,000 lbs and it even has an off-road package. The FX4 Off-Road Package makes the Maverick a small, off-road pickup, just don’t expect it to go everywhere a Ford Raptor can go.

Will Ford’s small truck be a PHEV?

While the Maverick is not yet a PHEV, there is potential that it could become one. But currently, that is just rumors and speculation. PHEV models are ideal for those who may want the benefits of an electric powertrain but do not want to fully commit to a dedicated EV. Models that are PHEVs have an electric motor as well as a combustion engine. Which is beneficial in a variety of conditions.

Perhaps a PHEV Maverick could be coming in 2023. But we won’t know for sure until Ford makes that announcement.
