Typically lightning comes first, then you hear the thunder, but the Ford Maverick is messing up the natural order of things. Instead of coming out with an electric Maverick Lightning, we’re getting the Ford Maverick Thunder, and it could arrive with a major boom.

Ford Maverick Thunder: What we know so far

The Ford Maverick Thunder could happen

We’re still waiting to learn more about the Ford Maverick Thunder, but according to AutoBlog, it could be the name of a new trim level. Ford filed three separate trademark applications for the Maverick Thunder, Ranger Thunder, and F-150 Thunder.

We have to admit that the Ford F-150 Thunder makes the most sense because the Ford F-150 Lightning is officially hitting the streets. However, we are still waiting for an electric Maverick, and the Ranger doesn’t even have a hybrid setup yet.

It could be primarily an appearance package or an off-roading package. The 2022 Ford Ranger Thunder has a unique shade of Sea Grey paint with bright red accents around the grille and badges.

The truck rides on 18-inch darkened wheels and is based on the Wildtrak off-roading trim. It’s powered by a 2.0-liter twin-turbocharged diesel engine with 213 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

The American Ranger has a 2.3-liter engine with 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, so the Maverick Thunder and other models might not gain extra power.

2023 Ford Maverick: What’s new?

Aside from the Ford Maverick Thunder providing an attractive look and off-roading upgrades, there is a lot going on. For example, the 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid might gain a new all-wheel drive system.

Ford patented a new triple AWD system that can adjust the amount of power sent between the left and right wheels. The AWD system uses three clutches and could allow more power to flow through the chassis.

We still have our eyes on the Ford Maverick ST, which is a sportier model designed for racing. Spy photos potentially show the Maverick ST with a dual exhaust, but the current Maverick only has one outlet.

It may have an extra intercooler in the front to help cool the engine and wider fender flares for more control. The Maverick can already accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.4 seconds, so the extra speed sounds exciting.

What about the Maverick Rattler?

Don’t let Ford Maverick Thunder rumors make you forget about the Ford Maverick Rattler rumors. The Ford F-150 Rattler is an affordable off-roading package, so we would love to see it on the Maverick.

While the Maverick Rattler could add off-roading equipment without breaking the bank, the Maverick Thunder could add a little more luxury with comfort and convenience features. This would provide more options to better meet the needs of more drivers.

The 2023 Ford Maverick is expected to start at about $20,000, and the new trim levels and package could add a few thousand bucks to the price. The Rattler could be the cheapest option, while the Thunder and ST cost a bit more.

We should know more about the 2023 Maverick soon because the order books will open in August. Stay tuned for the latest Maverick updates.
