Last year, Ford thought it was a good idea to mock Tesla over some problems with the Model Y glass roof. Now it appears the Ford Mustang Mach-E is having a similar issue to the Tesla SUV. What’s the problem here, and did Ford get itself into a pickle?

The Tesla Model Y had similar roof issues to the Ford Mustang Mach-E

According to an article by Electrek, Ford recalled the Mustang Mach-E after issues with the glass roof. Last year, Ford’s head of development, Darren Palmer, aimed at the Tesla Model Y roof issues. In fact, he said that buyers would have to accept the EVs flaws to enjoy the vehicle. “The doors fit properly, the plastics and other materials color-match, the bumpers don’t fall off, the roof doesn’t come off when you wash it,” Palmer said. Though he didn’t mention the Model Y by name, it was apparent what he was referencing.

If you recall, one family was driving a Tesla Model Y down the highway when the roof came off. According to a Business Insider article from Oct. 2020, Nathaniel Chien reported his roof flying off while on the road. “Suddenly, there was a lot of wind; it sounded like there was a window open, and then suddenly it lifted off.” The automaker issued a recall about a month later.

Canadian Mach-E EVs are being recalled over the problem

Now it seems Ford has a foot-in-mouth situation with the Mustang Mach-E. The automaker has had to issue two different recalls in Canada due to quality issues with the roof.

“On certain vehicles, the glass panel of the panoramic sunroof may not be properly attached. Over time, the glass could become loose and separate from the vehicle.”

Ford recalled 1,812 Mach-E’s for one issue related to the panoramic sunroof. The recall says that the glass might come loose and separate from the vehicle over time due to an adhesive issue. Ford recalled another 3,178 Mach-E cars for a similar problem with the windshield. The recall states that some of the vehicles might have an improperly installed windshield, which could cause the windshield to separate from the car.

The problem seems contained for now

Oddly enough, Ford has only issues this recall for the Mustang Mach-E in Canada. Ford makes all of the Mach-E EVs in the same factory in Mexico. It’s possible that the problem was limited to a batch of vehicles slated for delivery to Canada. Either way, it is a bit funny Ford of all companies was laughing at Tesla’s expense. Tesla might have been wrong when Model Y roofs were flying off, but Ford isn’t exactly known for its quality control.

The good news is that regardless of the humor in the situation, it seems Ford is acting swiftly to get the problem remedied. Just like Tesla was swift with a fix for the Model Y problems back in 2020. Ford says it will be contacting owners soon to arrange a fix. The automaker suggests bringing the Mach-E into a local dealership to clean and install additional adhesive to keep the glass roof in place.

What’s the lesson here? Those who drive in glass roof electric vehicles should not throw stones, or something like that.
