It’s 2024. The Dodge Challenger is dead (long live the Dodge Challenger). And the ICE-powered Chevrolet Camaro isn’t far behind. It’s a bleak reminder that the emissions-spewing V8 muscle car may have already had its day. However, the Ford Mustang remains for its seventh generation, and its Q2 sales speak for themselves.

The Ford Mustang is enjoying a sales victory lap as the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger bow out

It’s no secret that 2023 was the final model year for the mighty LA-platform Dodge Challenger and its gas-swilling V8 library. However, the Challenger isn’t alone on its way out. 2024 will be the final model year for the gas-powered Chevrolet Camaro as well. Tragically, that marks the departure of two-thirds of the modern American muscle car market.

However, the remaining one-third is enjoying a bit of a victory lap. The seventh-generation Ford Mustang, the still-new S650, rolled off the line as a 2024 model. With it, the new Mustang carried over its 2.3L four-cylinder EcoBoost and tenured 5.0L Coyote V8 engines. While the Mustang goes without new mills, both engines receive a power bump, with the Coyote now producing up to 500 horsepower in the range-topping Dark Horse.

Buyers embraced the updated pony car. Specifically, car shoppers took home about 13,737 ‘Stangs in Q2 2024. It’s a staggering 28% improvement over the second quarter of last year. Altogether, the Mustang’s year is 8% ahead of the first half of 2023.

While the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger to the great drag strip in the sky, buyers have made it clear that they still want a sporty domestic badge. Better yet, car buyers whose hearts beat to the sound of a naturally aspirated V8 still have an option in America’s sweetheart pony car.
