The Ford Mustang Mach-E Is Correcting 1 Major Issue
You know what really charges us up? The Ford Mustang Mach-E. But after reviewing the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, we found a few potential issues that could be improved. Now one of the biggest problems will be fixed for 2022.
The 2022 Mustang Mach-E seeks a better range
During our time with the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, we took it on a small road trip that was about three and a half hours long. During that trip, we were plagued by slow charging times and charging stations that were down.
We actually see the charge on the Mach-E hit zero before finding a DC fast charging station that was working. This left us appreciating the Mach-E’s ability to make it but wishing that it had a better range and faster charging times.
Donna Dickson, Mustang Mach-E Product Chief Engineer, recognizes these issues and plans to fix them by upgrading the 2022 Mustang Mach-E. The current Mach-E is the foundation that Ford is going to build from.
How will the 2022 Mach-E be improved?
Currently, the Mustang Mach-E has a range of between 211 to 305 miles depending on which battery pack you pick and if it’s all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. This is about average for its class. The EPA rates this efficiency as about a 90 to 101 MPG equivalent.
But the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E should receive battery range improvements, with more updates coming in 2023 and 2024. The first strategy for improving range involves trimming vehicle weight.
Ford will also look into other ways for improving battery efficiency. For example, they will look into improving the battery cooling system. The maze of underhood hoses for the cooling system will be addressed.
Heavy rubber hoses can be replaced with thinner, lighter plastic lines and redirected to a consolidated single coolant reservoir to replace the current dual reservoirs. The automatic parking pawl will also be eliminated.
Some believe that the DC fast charging capabilities of the Mustang Mach-E aren’t being fully utilized. The charging cure is pretty good, with a 20 to 80 percent SOC range. Then it significantly drops. Perhaps it could be improved with a software update.
How do you charge the Mach-E?
You can charge the Ford Mustang Mach-E at home with the Ford Mobile Charger that’s included. It can be plugged into a standard 120V outlet or a 240V NEMA 14-50 outlet. But it only adds about three miles per hour.
This is a level 1 charger. With a Level 2 charger, you can gain about 20 to 25 miles per hour. Also, you can have a level 2 charger installed at home or find one through the FordPass network.
DC fast chargers offer the most speed, but most homes don’t have the electrical capacity to support them. It will charge the battery from 0 to 80 percent in about 52 minutes. But it takes longer to reach 100 percent because the charging speed is substantially reduced after reaching 80 percent.
