The Ford Mustang Mach-E is one of the latest EVs that’s been making waves and selling well. But though the Mach-E has been a hit with consumers, it might become a fleet vehicle, too. Here’s a look at how the Ford Mustang Mach-E could join the police force.

EVs for everyone

Thanks to Tesla, electric vehicles in recent years have been booming. Customers have plenty of models to choose from, far more than a decade ago. And EVs are diversifying in many ways, too. You can find small and cheap models, luxury versions, and more spacious EVs, to name a few. 

However, those aren’t the only cars on the road. Environmentalists want as many vehicles to go green as possible, and that means making EVs available for as many segments as possible. For example, Amazon is acquiring a fleet of electric vans from Rivian.

EVs as fleet vehicles are also being proposed for other businesses and entities. This includes Amazon’s competitors in the delivery world, but also police forces. Indeed, that’s exactly why a Ford Mustang Mach-E might become a police car. 

Why the Ford Mustang Mach-E could become a cop car

According to CNET, some police departments are looking to go green. So an EV could become a fleet vehicle for that police force. This interest in EVs encouraged Ford to create a concept version of the Mustang Mach-E tailored to law enforcement’s needs. Not only that, but some police departments have already expressed interest in this Mach-E variant. 

This interest in the Mach-E as a police vehicle is mostly happening in the United Kingdom, CNET reports. In fact, seven British police forces have evaluated or asked to test the Ford Mustang Mach-E as a cop car. However, no police forces have committed to using it as a fleet vehicle yet.

Additionally, there’s no indication American police forces are rushing to use the Mach-E anytime soon. This is probably for the best because Ford has struggled to meet consumer demand for the Mach-E, mostly due to the chip shortage. Regardless, the Mach-E could be a great cop car for several reasons.

How a Ford Mustang Mach-E police car would work

One of the best things about the Ford Mustang Mach-E is its performance. According to CNET, the Mach-E concept that Ford showed off is based on the standard Mach-E with all-wheel drive. Thus, it could go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. That’s decent acceleration, but the Blue Oval might offer a more powerful model to the police. For instance, the Mach-E GT can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. 

That said, police departments looking at the Mach-E must also consider battery range. Ford’s concept model has the standard range of only 211 miles. However, Ford will offer an extended-range option and a rear-wheel-drive option, CNET reports. Depending upon the configuration, police departments could get up to 300 miles on the Mach-E.

You might be curious about how all the police gear would affect the Mach-E’s range. After all, the sirens, lights, radios, and other equipment need power. However, CNET says all of that hardware will draw power from a separate 12-volt battery, as with a regular police car. So it won’t affect the Mach-E’s range.
