Ford Mustang Mach-E Electric Police Cars Cost NYC $11.4 Million
Ford Mustang Mach-E electric crossovers are proving to be the vehicle of choice for New York City fleets. After recently becoming yellow taxis, NYC spent $11.4 million to make them into police cars. Like the previous Fox Body SSP from the 1980s, the Mustang name carries on in the NYC police force. The city paid a premium to get 184 total Mustang Mach-E GT electric crossovers.
$11.4 million NYC police cars: all Ford Mustang Mach-E GTs
According to The Drive, the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services announced that these vehicles are for the NYPD, Department of Environmental Protection, and other local agencies. Moreover, NYC has the largest municipal fleet in the country. Around 30,000 vehicles make up the fleet, including about one-fifth of NYPD light-duty enforcement vehicles. In the grand scheme of 30,000 cars, 184 doesn’t seem like much. However, $11.4 million seems like a lot, no matter how you twist it.
Ford is marketing and building these Mach-E units as police cars, though no difference has been mentioned. In some cases, Ford would add things like the aforementioned “SSP” or “Police Interceptor” to the title. That’s not the case here, but Ford didn’t release information about police modifications on these units.
How do they charge all these electric police cars?
To avoid situations like the LAPD’s plans to use BMW i3 police cars, NYC will install 275 fast chargers around the city. These fast chargers are exclusively for municipal EVs, but it has a much larger goal. Subsequently, the city wants to install quadruple that number of chargers by the end of the decade. With this many fast-charging stations available, police will have no problem getting around the city in their new EVs.
Additionally, the city chose the right tool for the job. Ford Mustang Mach-E electric police cars will have the same power and range as every standard model. That’s good news because the Mach-E GT makes 480 horsepower, 600 lb-ft of torque, and over 270 miles of range. Additionally, these units are all-wheel drive, just in case the streets of NYC are overtaken with a winter dusting.
NYC leaders might buy Tesla Model 3s
According to the same report from The Drive, NYC’s leaders are considering adding 250 Tesla Model 3s into the NYPD fleet. The NYPD has already signed off for that contract, which is entirely separate from the Mustang Mach-E electric police cars, but it remains unfinalized.
Tesla Model 3s are a little smaller and less powerful but have more driving range. In different areas, it depends on the primary purpose of the police cars. For example, Michigan State Police tested the Ford Mustang Mach-E as an electric police car. Consequently, the results were less than favorable, especially back seat space and top speed. That’s why Michigan chose not to use Ford Mustang Mach-E electric police cars, but now NYC will.
In conclusion, the city of New York spent a whole lot of money on electric police cars. The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is an excellent electric crossover vehicle with tons of power. Thanks to new fast-charging installations all over the Big Apple, police won’t have to worry after their 270 miles of range is over. Hopefully, they won’t need too much back seat space after making some arrests.
