Not a Real Mustang? The Ford Mustang Mach E Outsells the Gas-Powered Muscle Car
Since its introduction, the Ford Mustang Mach E has been controversial. At least among enthusiasts. There’s really no shortage of complaints that the Blue Oval ruined its iconic muscle car by turning it into an electric SUV. But, it’s important to remember, enthusiasts are not what drives the market. And clearly, Ford saw a reason to take the Mustang away from its roots.
What is the Ford Mustang Mach E?
The Ford Mustang Mach E is an electric SUV that is focused on offering performance and practicality. It might be a departure from Mustangs of the past, but you really can’t deny that it has legitimate power. Plus, you get instant delivery of torque, and isn’t that what being a muscle car is all about?
We could spend a long time arguing that point, but there’s no getting around it. According to The Autopian, it looks like more Mustang Mach E models were sold globally through 2022 than the gas-powered model.
For nearly six decades, the Mustang nameplate meant a coupe or convertible, but as EVs begin to take over, that’s changing.
The Mustang Mach E is rowdy
Now, my main automotive interest might lay with 4×4 trucks and SUVs, but I’ve always had a soft spot for the Mustang. I’ve had the opportunity to drive these vehicles in the past, and there’s something to be said for a car that, for the most part, has been committed to offering a fun drive.
Maybe the Mach E does not come with a potent combustion engine, but it does have direct steering and what is essentially an on/off switch for power. And it looks like consumers are responding to that. Some folks just need four doors, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want the heritage of an iconic sports car.
Although the Ford Mustang Mach E might have it down in terms of numbers. A gas engine provides that feeling of a “soul” that many of us have come to love from our cars. And while some of us might have strong feelings that a real Mustang needs an engine, clearly, Ford does not.
How many Mustang Mach E SUVs has Ford sold?
According to Ford Authority, the Blue Oval managed to sell 28,089 Mach E units in 2022. That means an increase of about 49% when compared to 2021. And through 2023, Ford is planning to continue to ramp up production of this electric SUV, allowing for more units to be sold.
Despite this, the Mach E is still facing supply chain constraints. And production does remain limited. Once Ford is able to figure these issues out, this performance EV will probably only grow in popularity. Simply put, it appeals to more folks than the gas-powered Mustang because most consumers want the benefits of four doors.
We can debate whether the Mach E is a real Mustang or not until the cows come home. But, the sales numbers show that the Blue Oval has made a winner.
