During the Ford Q2 2022 earnings call, CEO Jim Farley discussed three of the most popular Ford models. Apparently, the Bronco, Maverick, and F-150 each have some unknown variants in the works right now. Recently, outlets like CarBuzz reported that Ford filed a trademark for a Maverick and Ranger Lightning. That points to all-electric versions, but that’s not what Farley is talking about. He specifically mentioned the hybrid Maverick, which means it’s something new about the existing truck.

“Our design center is filled with new products and derivatives that will further strengthen our hit vehicles in the ICE and hybrid franchises like F-150 and Bronco and Maverick.”

An all-wheel drive hybrid Maverick?

Could Ford’s CEO be talking about an all-wheel drive version of the Ford Maverick? Currently, the standard powertrain is hybrid, but it’s also front-wheel drive only. Customers must pay extra for the gas-only EcoBoost engine to get all-wheel drive. As a result, the Maverick loses its most attractive feature, the excellent fuel economy, and becomes more expensive. Moreover, a version of the Maverick as a hybrid with AWD at a similarly affordable price would be monumental.

In addition, to that possibility, CarBuzz already mentioned the Maverick Tremor patents. This means an off-road-focused version of the tiny pickup truck is on the way. Could a hybrid, AWD, Maverick Tremor be Farley’s big Maverick secret?

A luxury Ford Bronco might be in the works

Let’s face it, the vast majority of Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler owners aren’t using them for off-roading. Many buy these for their removable tops, rugged design, and reputation. Not everyone uses them for the off-roading purpose for which they’re built. As a result, there’s definitely a market for a luxury version of the Bronco.

Because the Bronco is so off-road-ready, it’s also relatively minimalistic and bare on the inside. A version of the same SUV with a more luxurious interior seems like an excellent idea. “You can imagine high-end versions, all sorts of things,” Farley said about the Bronco. There are already so many ways to customize the off-road SUV, but they’re all just that, off-road SUVs. It would be nice to see an option for buyers who like the look, feel, and name but won’t go off-roading any time soon.

New Bronco, Maverick, and F-150 variants are coming

The CEO of Ford gave hints about a SuperDuty F-150 as well. However, without more details, it’s difficult to reveal any more information. If this comes to fruition, it will likely be similar to the F-250 SuperDuty, a work truck with extra capability and strength.

In conclusion, Ford is working on new variants of the popular Bronco, Maverick, and F-150. Although we don’t know for sure what’s coming, there are a few different possibilities. An all-wheel drive hybrid Maverick, an off-road Maverick, a luxury Bronco, and a SuperDuty F-150 might be in the works. For now, we’ll have to wait for the 2022 Detroit Auto Show in September, where the automaker will likely share more information.
