With a newfound interest in electric trucks by consumers, various manufacturers have been working to capitalize on the EV truck market. Ford is already doing this with the Ford F-150 Lightning, which will be a full-size EV pickup. But recently, the brand hinted that the Lightning will not be the only EV truck in the lineup. Although, details right now are fairly unclear.

Ford is planning a new EV truck

According to MotorTrend, the F-150 Lightning will not be Ford’s only EV truck for long. Apparently the CEO of Ford, Jim Farley hinted at a new EV pickup is already in the works. This revelation is really not surprising, as EV Ford models like the Mustang Mach-E and Ford Lightning have been extremely popular. So much so, that Ford is having to increase production in order to meet demand.

As far as what we know so far, this new EV truck will still be in the F-series of trucks. For those shopping for a more compact or mid-size truck, this might come as a slight disappointment. Surely with how well the Ford Maverick hybrid is selling, an EV Ford Maverick would do just as well, if not better.

Is Ford planning an electric Raptor?

The Ford F-150 Raptor has long been a popular off-road truck with serious performance, and maybe Ford is planning to electrify it. Currently, the Ford F-150 Lightning is being built with the standard F-150 platform, although it is heavily modified. But, for 2025, this EV truck will ride on an all-new platform. This could open the door to giving the F-150 EV the Raptor treatment.

Undoubtedly, a Raptor truck with the benefits of an EV powertrain would be a hit among truck buyers. Traditional thinking may lead one to believe that a performance truck needs a potent V8 engine, but even the current F-150 Raptor uses a turbocharged V6. With the instant power delivery of an electric motor, the Raptor package would also bring off-road capability to a Ford EV.

Will Ford build a Super-Duty EV?

Although Ford did clarify that Farley’s comments were not in regards to heavy-duty EVs, giving Ford’s Super-Duty family an EV powertrain is an exciting prospect. These trucks are already extremely capable but with the benefits of electrification, they could also be efficient. But it appears Ford does not have that in its plans right now.

If Ford is not working on a heavy-duty EV, maybe a more economical choice could be an option. With the Maverick’s affordability, it has been selling like hotcakes. So much so, that Ford was forced to place a pause on orders. Is it possible that Ford is planning to revive the F-100 series of trucks? The brand has teased a vintage pickup with a modern EV setup already.

Both the Lightning Pro and Lightning XLT sold out incredibly fast. This shows buyers are interested in an EV truck that may not have all of the features but is still capable of getting the job done. But, at the end of the day, only Ford knows what its plans are.
