In a world where everything was going electric, Ford has pulled the plug on the Electric Super Duty pickup truck. They plan on sticking with the Electric Ford F-150 for now, which is surprising because an electric super duty truck would give them one heck of an edge. 

Ford nixes the Electric Super Duty Truck 

There is a ton of electric pickup truck competition on the way with the GMC Hummer EV, Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian R1T, and more. But Ford is confident with their Electric F-150 for now. However, they will not diversify with an electric super duty truck that closely follows the F-150. 

Kumar Galhorta, President of Ford Americas and International Markets Group, shared that at the moment, Ford has no plans to go into any heavy-duty with electric-battery vehicles. So, is a hybrid super duty off the table as well? 

For the time being, the decision makes total sense. The Ford F-150 EV can be used to test what the EV pickup market wants. This also allows Ford to invest their time, resources, and energy into making a really good truck as they enter this new market segment instead of splitting everything between two OK trucks. 

What do we know about the Electric Ford F-150? 

According to Motor1, the F-150 EV could have a two-motor powertrain with over 450 hp or 336 kilowatts. It may also have a battery range of 300 miles, which isn’t competitive enough. Rivals like the Tesla Cybertruck claim that they will have 400 to 500 miles of electric range.

It will also have a little flair to differentiate itself from the gasoline-powered trucks and the hybrid. It’s not the same old F-150 without the combustion engine.

It has a new front end with an LED light bar running across the front. Plus, the Ford F-150 EV will have a front truck or frunk. Meaning under the hood, you will find a storage area. 

The truck could be named the Ford F-150 Electric or the Ford F-150 EVerglades for more pizzazz. It’s expected to go on sale toward the middle or end of 2022. Pricing information has not been released. 

Ford will most likely offer the 2023 F-150 EV in a variety of different trim levels. The blue-collar trim might be a little barebones, but it will provide an excellent deal for fleets looking to become more efficient. 

The Electric F-150 will undoubtedly continue the Ford tradition of being a serious work truck with comfort and luxury. That’s why a teaser video showed it towing 1.25 million lb on train tracks. While it won’t be able to pull trains, it should have more power than the 2021 Ford F-150’s 14,000 lb towing capacity. 

When will we learn more about the 2023 Ford F-150 EV?

Ford likes to make significant announcements in the summer, so perhaps that’s when we will get an update in 2021. The F-150 EV has already been in testing. Plus, Ford has started constructing a new factory to build the EV. 

The new Ford Factory is next to the current F-150 factory in Dearborn, Michigan. Hopefully, Ford and other auto manufacturers won’t face any more delays caused by the present Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak.
