The new Ford Ranger finally arrived in the United States, but this is only the beginning! Rumors have been flying about the possibility of the hybrid, electric, or PHEV model that are backed by solid clues. The most recent updates reveal that the Ford Ranger PHEV is in motion.

The Ford Ranger PHEV or plug-in hybrid model could arrive in America sooner than expected. The hybrid and electrified models seemed to be swept under the rug with a primary focus on the gas-powered models.

However, the Drive may have discovered plans for the Ranger PHEV to arrive in Australian showrooms within the next year. This tracks, as everything for the Ranger happens in Australia first.

When the Ranger was discontinued in America, it lived on in Australia. Australia got the new models months before us as well. So, if the Ranger PHEV debuts in 2024 over there, then we could get the 2025 Ford Ranger PHEV.

Plus, the Ranger was developed to support electric powertrain options in the future. The turbocharged 2.3-liter engine could be paired with a battery pack and two electric motors to generate more efficient power.

It currently generates 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. It’s the one engine option that the global and American Ranger have in common, so it would craft a global version. But the PHEV models could be paired with exclusive engines as well.

How much power will the Ranger PHEV have?

The official specs or goals for the Ford Ranger PHEV haven’t been released. However, we can speculate that Ford is looking to compete against the upcoming Jeep Gladiator 4xe. Ford might also want to beat the Gladiator PHEV to market.

We’re still waiting to learn more about the potential Jeep Gladiator 4xe, but spy shots indicate that the refreshed truck is on track to debut by the end of the year.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine with two electric motors and a 17-kWh battery pack to generate 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. It has an EPA-estimated range of 22 miles on a single charge and gets about 49 MPGe.

Both the Ranger PHEV and Gladiator PHEV could be aiming for more power to account for their extra weight and to maintain their towing capacities. The Ranger can tow up to 7,500 lbs, and the Gladiator can tow up to 7,700 lbs. The Wrangler 4xe can tow up to 5,000 lbs.

The 2024 Ford Ranger starts with the standard 2.3-liter engine, but you can upgrade to the new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine for 315 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. The Ford Ranger Raptor packs a punch with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine with 405 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque.

Each engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The 2023 Ranger gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway with the standard engine. Estimates for the 2024 model and new engines haven’t been released.

But the Ranger is expected to have a similar fuel economy until the PHEV arrives with efficient savings. It might be worth waiting for the Ranger PHEV if you want instant torque, a better fuel economy, and a quieter engine for off-roading.

Keep tracking the Ranger to catch the latest updates – you’ll want to stay tuned because the race for PHEV trucks is on.
