The Ford Ranger PHEV is more powerful and efficient than the Raptor
The Ford Ranger Raptor is the most powerful version of the truck, right? Wrong! The Ford Ranger PHEV is the new king of muscle in town. It has more torque while sipping significantly less fuel.
How much power does the Ford Ranger PHEV have?
The Ford Ranger PHEV pairs the 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with a 75.0-kilowatt electric motor and a battery pack to generate 275 hp and 509 lb-ft of torque.
That’s the most standard torque in the American and European lineup. American Ford Ranger Raptor uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine with 405 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. In Europe, the Raptor has 362 lb-ft of torque.
Americans do have the option of making their Ranger Raptor trucks more powerful, though. There’s a new Ford Performance tune that adds 50 hp and 106 lb-ft of torque to increase power to 455 hp and 536 lb-ft of torque. But it doesn’t save any fuel.
The tuner costs $825. It comes with a Ford Performance Parts warranty of three years or the first 36,000 miles.
With the Ranger Raptor, you get an EPA-estimated 16 mpg in the city and up to 18 mpg on the highway. During my week with one, I hovered around 15.8 mpg, but I didn’t have to use the Sport mode as much as I did.
The Ford Ranger PHEV gets an EPA-estimated 28 miles of electric range. Other fuel economy estimates have not been released. However, the Ranger PHEV is slated to enter production soon.
Because production will be in South Africa, it’s unclear if the Ranger PHEV will make it to America. Shipping costs and the chicken tax could ruin the profit margin.
But some Ford dealerships are hinting that the Ford Ranger PHEV will launch in North America soon. New Ranger variants typically launch in Europe and Australia about a year before the truck comes to America.
