The Ford Ranger Raptor Has Engine Problems Down Under
Oh no, the new Ford Ranger Raptor could be in trouble. There are reports of engine problems from Australia, where this new truck has been available for months. We’re still waiting on the 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor in America, but it could have a serious issue to correct first.
Does the 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor have engine problems?
The 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor might have engine problems, so we’re here to investigate. As we wait for new Ford Ranger models to enter production in the United States, many drivers are already behind the wheel in Australia.
About 12 models in the field have needed engine replacements due to an issue with the valve springs and misfiring engine cylinders. As this issue is investigated, it could lead to a recall or stall production in America to correct the problem before new models are shipped out.
The Ranger Raptor has the same engine in Australia and America. It comes with the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that provides 405 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque in the U.S. Due to strict emission standards, it only has 392 hp and 362 lb-ft of torque in Australia.
Drivers may notice the issue due to a rough idle, and then Special Service Message (SSM) 51979 displays several service codes for random misfires in each cylinder.
Technicians are then instructed to check for damaged spark plugs. If replacing those components doesn’t correct the issues, then it’s time to perform a compression test and cylinder leakage test.
When those tests are out of specification, then each valve needs to be opened to see if the valve springs are broken and to check for further engine damage.
If the engine isn’t damaged, then only the springs and other damaged parts need to be replaced. Otherwise, the entire engine and the turbocharger from the affected side need to be replaced.
It’s currently unclear what is causing the valve springs to break or the cylinders to misfire. If it’s a widespread problem, hopefully, it can be corrected before production in America ramps up.
What comes with the 2024 Ranger Raptor?
The 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor features a 10.7-inch ground clearance and rides on 33-inch BFGoodrich KO3 all-terrain tires. It has standard 4×4 with a locking differential in the front and rear.
Plus, it has Fox 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks in all four corners with piggyback reservoirs in the rear. The track was widened by 3.5 inches to improve stability with a Watts linkages and trailing arm setup in the rear. It also has an active exhaust system.
The chassis features reinforced front frame rails and suspension mounting points to enhance durability. Skidplates protect the undercarriage.
The Ranger Raptor has a 33-degree approach angle, which is the worst in the segment. It has a 26.4-degree departure and breakover angle with 10 inches of suspension travel in the front and over 11 inches in the rear.
How much does the Ranger Raptor cost?
The 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor MSRP is $55,365. This price doesn’t include the $1,595 destination fee. You can order the 2024 Ranger Raptor online or with the help of a local Ford dealership.
However, the Ranger Raptor waiting time could be prolonged by the ongoing United Auto Workers (UAW) strike and potential engine problems to solve. Production is currently paused as negotiations take place.
Before the strike, waiting times could be between six months to a year, which doesn’t boost our confidence. It’s certainly worth waiting for, though. The new and improved dessert racer accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.6 seconds.
