The Ford Ranger Shows a Mid-Size Truck Doesn’t Need a V6
The 2022 Ford Ranger is a mid-size truck produced by the Ford brand. And while here in North America, we received the prior generation, it is still something worthy of consideration. But it is a slight departure from traditional mid-size trucks, that is because, with the 2022 Ford Ranger, a V6 engine is notably absent. That is not necessarily a bad thing though. Because Ford has provided the Ranger with a competent powertrain that has ample power delivery. A 2.3-liter turbocharged engine.
Does the 2022 Ford Ranger only have one powertrain?
The new Ranger only has one powertrain option. And that is a 2.3-liter turbocharged engine that makes 270 horsepower and 310 pound-foot of torque. It comes paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission for smooth power delivery. Which is something that is likely to be appreciated.
When properly equipped, the 2022 Ranger can tow up to 7,500 lbs and handle up to 1,905 lbs in payload. Which makes this mid-size truck seriously capable and utilitarian.
Is the 2022 Ford Ranger a good truck?
While a major update is expected for the Ford Ranger soon, a 2022 model is still something worthy of buying. Features like the available Tremor off-road package make this truck a vehicle that is ready to go off-road. Additionally, this truck boasts available four-wheel drive that comes with unique modes. Helping to optimize the Ford Ranger for the current conditions.
Because the Ranger is a modern truck, it also benefits from things like safety tech and infotainment. Which makes this mid-size truck a convenient option. This Ford is available in three different trim levels. Allowing buyers to get the proper amount of truck for their specific needs.
What’s new for the 2023 Ford Ranger?
The Ford Ranger will be redesigned for the 2023 model year. According to Car and Driver, Ford is expected to offer a turbodiesel V6 engine. But that likely will not be coming to the American market.
Considering the success of the Ford Maverick, we would not be surprised if Ford chooses to offer a hybrid powertrain. This would have the potential to make the Ranger a more efficient truck without having to sacrifice on capability.
There have also been rumors of a Ford Ranger Raptor coming to American shores. Other markets have gotten this option for some time. And the idea of a mid-size truck with Raptor treatment is an exciting prospect. Ford has already done the same for the new Bronco.
Should you wait to buy the 2023 Ranger?
Currently, this mid-size truck certainly feels dated. And that is because it was introduced to the U.S. at the end of its lifecycle. The 2023 model will be here soon though.
Because the 2023 model is a new truck, it may be something worth waiting for. That is, unless you need a new truck now. Once the new Ranger goes on sale, it is likely that orders will fill up quickly. Making this a difficult mid-size truck to find. But, for a revamped Ranger, the wait could certainly be worth it.
